This news comes as mountain face continued perils to their survival which include toxicity from consuming prey contaminated with rat poisons, human conflict, and vehicular collisions at the top of the list. This marks the first time that California has issued mountain lions these protections and will make it easier to plan for recovery.

Rat poisons are especially troubling as they can unintentionally poison predatory species including eagles & other birds of prey, mountain lions, wolves, coyotes, and more. Toxicity from rat poison leads to an excruciating end and honestly, there's simply no justification for these horrendous poisons that indiscriminately kill anything that comes into contact with them.

The protections will also force the state to continue to develop wildlife crossings over highways which have proven to reduce vehicular collisions with wildlife. This is a major win for mountain lions and the future of their survival.

Rhino Poaching in South Africa Drops 16% In 2025

worldanimalnews.com/2026/02/12/rhino-poaching-in-south-africa-drops-16-in-2025-conservationists-say-the-fight-is-far-from-over/

South Africa saw a decline of 16% in Rhino poaching in 2025 indicating that tireless anti-poaching initiatives have proven successful. With that being said, there is still considerable work to be done to end this barbaric practice that puts rhino populations in peril of further endangerment,

Rhino poaching for horns is barbaric and needless. Poaching is a sickness that demonstrates a complete lack of empathy and consideration for the survival of an entire species. Anti-poaching initiatives like dehorning, injecting horns with product that completely devalues them, polygraphing state park employees, and early-warning systems have helped to stave of rhino poaching. Poaching of rhinos happens on state owned land as well as privately owned parks, proving that the issue is widespread despite efforts to control it. With continued efforts, rhino poaching will hopefully continue to decline saving rhinos from future extinction.

Kudos to South Africa and International communities who have worked to protect them. We must continue to fight corruption and poaching in order to protect these beautiful animals. A future without rhinos is possible unless this tireless work continues.

HAPPY VEG

URGENT - Speak Out Now To Protect Wolves in the US

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/urgent-speak-out-now-to-protect-wolves-in-the-us

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/urgent-speak-out-now-to-protect-wolves-in-the-us#comments

Uncategorized

worldanimalnews.com/2025/12/18/urgent-action-needed-house-passes-bill-to-strip-protections-from-gray-wolves-heads-to-senate-for-final-vote/ After moving through the house, the Pet & Livestock Protection Act is now heading to the US Senate. If passed, grey wolves will lose their Endangered Species Act Protections and will be managed by individual states. We've already seen how this goes. They will undoubtedly eradicate wolves entirely and push the species to complete extinction if we do not speak out against this blatantly cruel bill that favours livestock farmers and targets wildlife.

I've spoken in depth about this before, but when we eradicate predatory species, prey species become abundant which then poses an entirely new set of problems. Without predatory species, prey species will become abundant which will have severe effects on their ecosystem. With no predators, herbivores will over populate nature areas which leads to the destruction of native plants / trees. What will our solution be then you ask? Naturally, we will then authorize the culling of prey species but this will only be temporary because we've seen that this method does not offer long-lasting solutions. Prey species become abundant again and again which means humans are in constant manipulation of the environment / animal kingdom.

Killing all the wolves instead of spending money to properly reinforce livestock enclosures is nothing short of cruelty. You want to protect your precious livestock and yet you leave them completely susceptible to predation by wolves that are well known to inhabit these spaces. Killing them all is the easy way out, but no one is contemplating the long term effects and consistent management that will require when all of the herbivores start to overpopulate. If livestock farmers are so concerned, why is there no money being funneled into reinforcing enclosures, electric fences, and other predatory deterrents? The reason is that this government hates animals, has no compassion, and hasn't properly thought out what this would mean for an entire species' survival. This government is shameful in their approach to wildlife management and has proven time and time again that they couldn't care less about the environment or animals on this planet.

Please, if you're in the United States, make your voice heard and oppose this blatantly cruel bill that will only create a plethora of new problems that have to be managed instead of addressing the short-comings of livestock farmers and the enclosures that keep their "precious" livestock contained. If this government has their way, there will be no more mountain lions, wolves, coyotes, bears, or anything else for that matter.

Visit the link at the top of this post from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS and make your voice heard before it's too late for wolves. Extinction is not something we can come back from.

HAPPY VEG

Good News For Animals

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/good-news-for-animals5772288

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/good-news-for-animals5772288#comments

Uncategorized

Canada Approves Whale Sanctuary Off Coast of Nova Scotia LEARN MORE BELOW from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS worldanimalnews.com/2025/10/22/major-victory-canada-approves-first-whale-sanctuary-offering-hope-a-future-beyond-captivity/ California Bans Deadly Gillnets to Protect Marine Life LEARN MORE BELOW from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS worldanimalnews.com/2025/10/21/victory-california-bans-deadly-gillnets-in-historic-win-for-marine-life/ California Bans Cat Declawing Sparing Millions of Cats from [...]

Canada Approves Whale Sanctuary Off Coast of Nova Scotia

LEARN MORE BELOW from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS

worldanimalnews.com/2025/10/22/major-victory-canada-approves-first-whale-sanctuary-offering-hope-a-future-beyond-captivity/

California Bans Deadly Gillnets to Protect Marine Life

LEARN MORE BELOW from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS

worldanimalnews.com/2025/10/21/victory-california-bans-deadly-gillnets-in-historic-win-for-marine-life/

California Bans Cat Declawing Sparing Millions of Cats from needless Pain & Cruelty

LEARN MORE below from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS

worldanimalnews.com/2025/10/10/california-legislature-passes-bill-to-ban-cruel-cat-declawing-bill-heads-to-governors-desk/

VOGUE goes FUR FREE!

LEARN MORE below from WORLD ANIMAL NEWS

worldanimalnews.com/2025/10/06/vogue-goes-fur-free-in-landmark-victory-for-animals-compassionate-fashion/

Mexico Enshrines Animal Welfare Laws into its Constitution

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/mexico-enshrines-animal-welfare-laws-into-its-constitution

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/mexico-enshrines-animal-welfare-laws-into-its-constitution#comments

Uncategorized

aldf.org/article/mexico-adds-animal-protection-to-its-constitution/ Mexico has taken an enormous stand for animal welfare after enshrining animal welfare laws into their Constitution. Among these protections, the enshrinement ensures that students in school will learn about animal welfare, although the extent of that ruling is yet to be determined. This is crucial you guys. Students need to be aware of the horrors that animals endure in order to create the next generation of compassionate individuals. If they're desensitized to cruelty, they will undoubtedly perpetuate, or turn a blind eye to cruelty should they witness it, so this is an important step to preventing future cruelty to animals.

Again, the details of this enshrinement are still in the works, and what they'll essentially cover is still rather grey, but it's still something to celebrate. These commitments will hopefully lead to necessary protections for farm animals which often times endure the worst treatment, living conditions, and abuse prior to their slaughter. It will also hopefully extend to wild animals that are in desperate need of valuable protections like the Vaquita, with fewer than 10 individuals left in the wild. Time is certainly of the essence when it comes to protecting this species and so many more.

With this enshrinement, animal abuse will be penalized properly and addressed like the serious problem that it truly is. If we don't demonstrate that cruelty towards animals is a serious offence, what prevents the next person from committing atrocities towards animals? If there's no fear of repercussions, or simply no worries over embarrassingly weak punishments, there is simply no deterrent to committing cruelty. Laws that ensure proper punishment are necessary in addressing abuse towards animals.

Learn more about Mexico's animal welfare stance through the link at the top of this post. It's important that we celebrate these victories to demonstrate a united commitment to animal welfare.

HAPPY VEG

Another Horse Drops dead in NYC

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/another-horse-drops-dead-in-nyc

https://www.thehappyveg.ca/animal-news/another-horse-drops-dead-in-nyc#comments

Uncategorized

worldanimalnews.com/2025/08/06/carriage-horse-named-lady-collapses-dies-in-nyc-another-tragic-reminder-that-this-industry-must-be-banned/ Another innocent horse has dropped dead on the busy streets of Manhattan, reigniting calls for reform on horse-drawn carriages. Lady, a 15 year old horse, was seen shaking violently as she fell to the ground pulling the carriage down with her. She was pronounced dead almost instantly and appallingly, quickly hustled in to a trailer so as to not cause a scene to onlookers who witnessed the incident. Those who saw it described it as "startling", and now, calls for reform are back at the forefront to prevent further incidents.

Look, this is something I've touched on MANY times in the past with every story that breaks about another innocent horse collapsing and dying in the streets. Gone are the days where horse-drawn carriages are a necessity. Let's be honest here, they're nothing more than novelty rides now, but the situation surrounding these novelty rides is not acceptable. These horses work long hours regardless of the weather and as we sit knee deep in a heat wave, I'm sure Lady felt the pressures of working in such blistering heat surrounded by traffic noise & pollution. Also, let's remember that traffic pollution is most certainly amplified during heat waves and intensely hot days which undoubtedly affected her.

Horse-drawn carriages do NOT belong on busy streets surrounded by excessive traffic and pollution. I've had many an argument with those in defense of carriages and all of them have argued ind efense of how their horses are cared for / treated. What does any of that matter if they're forced to drag around carriages all day in blistering heat? So you treat them well at the stables and then subject them to undeniable cruelty? Good for you.

Lady's story is a painful reminder that we must remove carriages from congested, traffic heavy streets. We're not talking about the peaceful countryside here you guys, we're talking about congested streets full of vehicles pumping out pollution that is amplified by the intense summer heat. We're talking about horses being subjected to forced labour while ingesting noxious traffic fumes for hours. You can argue until you're blue in the face about how the horses are treated when they're NOT working, but how many horses need to drop in the middle of a busy street before we recognize that what we're doing is cruel? What will it take for stubborn carriage drivers to recognize the perils that these horses face? It's abhorrent.

Let us reflect on the needless cruelty we bestow on innocent animals for our own novelty. Let us remember what it feels like to have to walk for any great length of time when there is a heat advisory and you're surrounded by vehicular pollution. If it's hard on us, why would we turn a blind eye to what these horses must be feeling? Lady's death must not be in vain! We have to speak out against horse-drawn carriages on busy streets and retire these beautiful animals from the chains we've forced on to them. Horses have long been partners with humans in our history, and now it's time for us to do the right thing and retire them from the horrendously cruel industry.

Click the link at the top of this post for the original story from World Animal News. This ban will see captive dolphins, whales, and other marine animals released to sanctuaries or pens and will prohibit the capture of wild aquatic species for entertainment purposed. The law will only allow captive marine life if it is for species rehabilitation or conservation efforts. This is yet another example of Mexico's continued commitment to improving animal welfare.

We've seen enough horror stories coming from places like Sea World where captive orcas are displaying behaviours associated with boredom and emotional stress. We've seen the stories where orcas are attacking or killing handlers in captivity. We've also seen enough stories about marine animals dying in captivity, proving that the only place they belong is in the wild. When you consider the amount of space they utilize in the ocean, to be kept captive in what is comparable to a bathtub for their whole lives is inherently cruel, and we've known this for ages.

Animals were not put on this planet for us to do with as we please. When it comes to entertainment, to think that we would subject these intelligent creatures to years of performing stupid tricks for crowds of people who have paid money to fuel the cycle of cruelty is embarrassing. With a world of entertainment at our fingertips, we cannot allow cruelty to animals to be something that is overlooked or considered "fun". It's not to the animals who are held captive. It's not fun to the ones plucked from the wild who knew freedom, only to spend the remainder of their lives in captivity.

Congratulations to Mexico for taking this much needed step in the right direction for animal welfare. This movement has the support of many advocacy groups including Four Paws UK, PETA UK, and Humane World For Animals UK and awaits a future decision surrounding a bill already aimed at closing loopholes that have seen the U.K. import fur products valued at millions of pounds every year.

Interestingly, the United Kingdom was the first in Europe to ban the production of fur, but despite this, continues to import furs from countries like Finland, China, and Greece. This sends a rather distorted message surrounding animal welfare in suggesting that simply because one has stopped producing, they hold no blame when selling these products. The fact is, if you've banned the production of fur, you've likely done so as a result of disagreeing with the cruelty towards animals. In fact, an overwhelming amount of Britons support a complete ban on fur from production to importing and selling so continuing to import is a confusing stance to take against the industry.

Fur is cruelty, plain and simple. The animals in these facilities are bred in to squalor living in cramped, often filthy wire cages with minimal access to food and water. They often exhibit several signs of distress, and many undercover investigations have proven the lack of care these animals receive documenting sores, lesions, cuts, and other abrasions that are left untreated. After a short, miserable life spent in fear and distress, they're then electrocuted or gassed in order to preserve their skins. The entirety of their existence is one of suffering and sadness. We cannot in this day in age, still be trying to justify the needless cruelty these animals experience for fashion. It's incredibly compassionless when we have a world of synthetics available to us. It's embarrassing and gross.

The United Kingdom has the distinction of being the first country in Europe to ban fur farming, so I would like to think that they would take the necessary steps to truly demonstrate an anti-cruelty stance in banning the import of furs as well. Remember, you're entirely complicit in the cruelty if you're simply allowing someone else to do it for you.

Fur is gross. We know better. End the madness and ban the import of fur. In fact, may I go a touch further and suggest that we just do away with it entirely. Especially in the case of China, c'mon now, China has the WORST animal cruelty issues in their nation and buying fur from them is so incredibly despicable when we know how animals are treated there. It's shameful and it's time to stop the slaughter, stop the cruelty, and ditch fur.

Learn more through the link at the top of this post. Our planet MUST go fur-free. Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden, recently announced that the company had quietly stopped using kangaroo leather during a shareholders meeting. This information was later confirmed by the president of the Center for a Humane Economy who had personally travelled to Germany in order to advocate for an end to kangaroo leather. This is an incredible victory for kangaroos and a reminder that high quality synthetics are available to us and don't involve needless slaughter.

Kangaroos slaughtered for their skins are often shot during night-time hunts. These hunts see adult kangaroos shot and left to die, regardless of whether they had Joeys (babies) with them. This leaves babies orphaned, or in worst case scenarios, bludgeoned / discarded like trash. At its peak, it was reported that in upwards of hundreds of thousands of adult kangaroos were slaughtered every night for high end soccer cleats or other leather products. Adidas' decision will spare hundreds of thousands of innocent kangaroos an unnecessary death at the hands of fashion.

Our planet is turning away from furs and needless torture imposed on animals for clothing. We're seeing fur farms across the globe shuttering due to decreased demand and global advocacy. We're seeing quality synthetics taking the place of animal products in high-end fashion. We're seeing country's ban the production / sale of fur. This movement, despite being long-overdo, is indicative of a global shift in how the treatment of animals is regarded. We have so many synthetic options available to us that are high quality, durable, and don't involve cruelty to animals. There's simply no excuse in this day and age to be slaughtering animals for clothing.

This news reminds us that there is still so much work to do when to comes to utilizing animals for fashion. While there is indeed a shift, animals are still being treated horrifically in the industry and we must continue to advocate on their behalf for a kinder, more compassionate planet. Decades of campaigning from advocacy groups and a general increase in animal awareness has made the demand for whale meat nearly non-existent. The announcement was widely shared by advocacy groups as a major victory, sparing innocent fin whales form being mercilessly slaughtered.

This story goes to show you that advocacy and education work. Whales are incredibly intelligent, social, and crucial to healthy oceans and marine ecosystems. Fin whales have long been targeted despite being listed as vulnerable to extinction. These stories remind us that extinction is permanent, if we eradicate a species for our own gain, where do we go from there? This has long been something I wondered if these hunters ever truly considered, where do you go once you've killed them all? When we're talking about "endangered" or "vulnerable", this indicates the possibility of extinction, so where do we go after we kill them all? Do we simply shift to another species that serves a similar purpose until we eradicate them as well? Where does the cycle end?

Unfortunately, there's still so many people on this planet who have absolutely no regard for the survival of other species on this planet. Whether we're discussing whales, giraffes, cheetahs etc, they're all dying and humans can be traced back to each and every species on this planet that is plunging towards extinction. In fact, there are currently two bills in the United States aimed at weakening protections for habitats / endangered species, proving that we still have so much work to do.

For now, we celebrate the end of the fin whale hunt in Iceland this year. Why reintroduce the same bill under a new name now? The House & Senate are controlled by Republicans almost ensuring that the bill will move forward as Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of empathy towards wild animals, particularly wolves.

Gray wolves have been under intense scrutiny since the end of the first Trump administration's time in office. Now, they're under further attack and if passed, this bill will undoubtedly ensure that gray wolves are once again, plunged towards extinction.

The livestock / animal agriculture industry is heavily protected in the United States, and is a large generator of profits. There have been multiple bills aimed at targeting wolves in order to strip their protections, and in some cases, individual state's have managed their own wolves & we have seen a rapid decline in their population. There is so much hatred towards wolves despite the fact that they are a crucial part of their ecosystem. Wolves help to manage other species and keep their ecosystem / habitat balanced. Eradicating them will see species like rabbit and deer populations explode, leading to further culling and hunting.

Statistically, wolves account for only 1% of sheep and cattle deaths. Also, Ranchers who improved perimeter fencing, employed guard dogs, and improved herding methods, have successfully managed to live in unison with wolf populations. Why aren't they all using these methods? Quite simply, it's easier, and less costly to simply slaughter the predators, rather than properly protect your precious livestock. Leaving livestock accessible to predators and then blaming said predators is a curious cycle that leads to increased wolf deaths and also, fuels the continued hatred towards a species that is only trying to survive on our planet.

This mentality of slaughtering everything that inconveniences us is inevitably going to lead us to a point where the only animals on this planet that remain, will be the ones we're producing for food. It's completely ridiculous and we know better. We know that increased protections for livestock prevent wildlife conflicts. We know this. We must do better for the wildlife on our planet. We aren't the only things that matter here and we need to stop acting like we are. The only acceptable thing to do is deny the "Pet & Livestock Protections Act" and go with the science surrounding wolves. We didn't spend 45 years rehabilitating the species to watch them eradicated over livestock.

Learn more through the link at the top of this post from World Animal News.

HAPPY VEG
