Conservation groups are filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration for failing to protect giraffes properly despite knowing how grave their situation is. Over 19 months ago, several conservation and animal rights groups filed a motion to allow the U.S Fish and Wildlife Services to grant giraffes protections under the Endangered Species Act but the Trump administration failed to acknowledge the motion leaving giraffes to move into the vulnerable status. Giraffes face several dangers in the wild that can hinder their existence such as civil unrest, habitat loss, and illegal poaching for meat and trophies. Their numbers have dropped 40% in only 3 decades which is extremely alarming and deserving of better protections under the ESA but Trump's administration is once again demonstrating its complete lack of empathy towards animals. As the article suggests, he'd rather allow his generous and wealthy donors to import giraffe trophies to mount on their walls than protect these beautiful creatures from going extinct. By allowing giraffes endangered species protection, it would allow imports of bones, carvings, and trophies to be tracked and dealt with and would also allow more money to go towards conservation. Without their approval to list them, giraffes will move closer and closer to extinction. Currently, the United States imports approximately one giraffe related trophy / carving per day which means that 365 giraffes are slaughtered for novelties and imported every year. It's utterly ridiculous to think that this government is still allowing these trophies to come into the country when you consider how few giraffes there are left. Once again, money proves to be the motivating factor in this obvious oversight.
