SPrague Cannery - Sloppy Joe Chili

After the success of the 3 Bean Plant-Based Chili, I was really excited to give their Sloppy Joe Chili mix a try! I've made my own Sloppy Joe mix from scratch and I must say, it's definitely one of those nostalgic dishes for me. Growing up, sloppy joe's were on a regular rotation for us and we ALWAYS grabbed a can of Manwich (remember that?). I can almost taste that familiar can.

Out of the can, it looked and smelled pretty much exactly as I remembered a sloppy joe mix. It had a hint of sweetness, was nice and chunky, and even the colour was pretty much what I was expecting. I appreciated the texture and thickness because a wet sloppy joe is not a vibe. I heated it up, grilled some brioche slider buns, and started assembling.
I gave the sloppy joe mix a taste before assembling and admittedly, there was a spice that was unfamiliar to me, much the same as there was in the plant-based chili. I didn't mind the flavour / spice, but it wasn't something I thought of when thinking about sloppy joes. I'll also say that beans wouldn't be a traditional sloppy joe addition, but because we're doing plant-based, I actually appreciated the extra texture / protein. Outside of that, pretty much everything else was identical to what I'd expect. It had that tomatoey flavour with a hint of sweetness, a nice texture / thickness, and the smell was bang on. As a ready to eat product, it really doesn't get any easier for quick, weeknight eats.

BUY! Look, I'll always recommend home made for everything, you can't beat a scratch made dish. With that being said, Sprague Cannery provides a super quick, super tasty alternative for a quick and delicious weeknight meal.

The cans are priced competitively but what I'll say is that they're small cans. If you're looking to feed the entire family, I'd probably recommend a couple cans minimum as I tested this can with 12 sliders and had JUST enough. If you're feeding four or more on standard sized buns, you're going to need a few cans for sure.

As I said, it's another great product from Sprague. Decent nutritional stats, good quality ingredients, good price point, and great flavour. I'd highly recommend <3

BYPASS or BUY - Uncle Bens 2 Min Cheesy Risotto

I'm a firm believer that in almost every case, home made will always be best. A few weeks back, I was on my way home and knew I was reheating some leftover curry but didn't want to wait for the rice to cook. In hindsight, they would've taken the same amount of time lol

Anyhow, I decided to grab a bag of 2 minute Basmati rice but they were 2 for 6, so I decided to snatch this cheese flavoured risotto as my second product. Look, I make banging risotto you guys, so I wasn't expecting this to be a masterpiece, but I also figured with heaps of preservatives and a three cheese blend that included blue cheese, it would probably be tasty. With that being said, I decided on a chik'n risotto sitch and got to work.

Upon opening the bag, I was immediately turned off by the clusters of pre-cooked risotto. I didn't like the look of it whatsoever but it could've still tasted amazing. I decided on their stove top method which I thought would actually make it better than just microwaving it. This also gave me time to bake up my plant-based chik'n filet.

As it cooked, I couldn't help but notice the smell...or rather, the lack there of. For a product containing blue cheese, I was expecting some pungency. While it was starting to look nice and creamy, the musty, pantry odour that was coming from it was turning my stomach. I gave it a taste and that's when I realized, it had absolutely no flavour. In fact, that musty smell I was picking up was quite literally, the only flavour. No salt, no cheese, no nothing, just musty, seemingly creamy risotto. I'm going to be honest, the crispy chik'n filet on top was the only salvageable part and without it, this risotto would've hit the trash.

B Y P A S S - This product is the epitome of why home made is always better than prepackaged. This risotto was offensive, stunk like old, musty cupboards, and lacked any flavour whatsoever. As I stated, to contain blue cheese and taste like licking a dusty cupboard shelf is strange and honestly, offensive. This was by far the worst thing I've put in my mouth in 2024, and that's a very confident guarantee. Stay away from this grotesque product you guys, I'm serious. The time saved is hardly worth the repulsive flavour and stench lol Don't buy this!
