Sprague Cannery is a Canadian canning company that originated back in 1925 and continues to operate to this day. They offer a variety of canned products ranging from regional baked beans to plant-based chilis. Their products are pressure-cooked which means they are free of preservatives, a big selling feature for me.

As someone who tends to make most of my food from scratch, I'm always eager to try a new, canned product because let's be honest, we can always use a weeknight shortcut. Most canned products are synonymous with heaps of preservatives and loads of unwelcome sodium which is why I tend to shy away. I decided to give their Plant-Based Triple Bean Chili a go so let's dive in.
Right off the bat, I was struck by how clean the ingredients were. Hemp seeds, cane sugar, chia seeds, beans, all things I not only can pronounce, but are familiar ingredients. No fillers, no freaky ingredients here. I was also pleasantly surprised by the sodium content. I've seen in upwards of 40% or more in a single serving when it comes to canned products. Sprague keeps the sodium at a respectable level without sacrificing flavour or quality.

Taste Test

When it comes to canned products, you never know what you're going to get. First of all, I loved the colour of the chili. It was vibrant and looked flavourful. Upon tasting, I was pleasantly surprised you guys! It had a lovely flavour, definitely gave that chili vibe. There were a couple flavour notes I didn't recognize or attribute to a traditional chili, but they worked and I enjoyed every bite of this delicious chili.

Admittedly, it was missing heat. I need my chili spicy you guys. With that being said, the can made it very clear it was a mild chili. This however, is an easy fix. Toss in some pepper flakes as it bubbles away to kickstart that heat action and you've got a wonderful product here. If it had been missing flavour, that's a challenge, but the heat was an easy fix.

Bypass or Buy?

BUY - I can't believe I'm actually suggesting purchasing canned chili, but here I am doing so! Look, homemade is always best, but in a pinch, I'd highly recommend Sprague's Plant-Based Triple Bean Chili. I enjoyed the quality of the ingredients, lack of preservatives or fillers, and frankly, it tasted great. I used it on some chili dogs and I'll tell you, best chili dogs I've had in ages. I'm super excited to test out some of their other products and will touch base with you guys when I do!
