There are so many potato varieties out there and without knowing, you could be purchasing the wrong potato for the job!
Large, irregularly shaped potatoes like the Idaho Potato have a high starch content to them. This means they are perfect for mashing into fluffy, mashed potatoes. They are great for baking or cutting into fries. Smaller, round potatoes like New Potatoes or Mini potatoes, have a lower starch content. These sorts of potatoes are great for salads and roasting. Their low starch content helps them keep their shape once being cooked. This is definitely a very general rule but the information is pretty handy to have. When shopping, keep in mind what you are using the potato for and this will help you when looking for the right potato. Here's another tip! Generally, bags of potatoes have recipes on the back of them. By looking at the recipe they provide, you can determine what the potato's best use is. Don't forget to GOOGLE! I say this often but it's there to help. If you're making mashed taters, google some recipes and look at what's most common. This should also help! |
