An Ohio zoo was recently tasked with a difficult decision after a young boy managed to fall into a gorilla enclosure. When faced with a decision like this, the zoo obviously has to take the appropriate measures to save the boy's life. In this case, they euthanized the gorilla before it physically harmed the boy saving his life.
Now, here's why I'm a little pissed off about this. A few weeks ago, a young man managed to weasel his way into a lion enclosure in an attempt to commit suicide. This resulted in 2 lions being shot dead to save the mans life. Given the options in both cases, I support the zoos decision to save the lives of the people involved in these cases. With that being said, I think this shines a light on the lackluster security of these enclosures at both zoos and DEFINITELY proves something more needs to be done to prevent this from happening. How in the world did this little boy have time to weasel his way into the enclosure with the gorilla? My parents would never have taken their eyes off us kids long enough to allow something like this to happen. Secondly, in the case of the lion enclosure incident, where are the zookeepers and how could they overlook something like this? This implies to me that the security surrounding these areas is not up to par. All entry points to enclosures should be guarded with some kind of security features like standing guards or alarms. These situations should not even have an opportunity to occur. Three innocent animals lost their lives thanks to poorly secured enclosures. Three innocent animals were shot dead in front of onlookers. Three innocent animals who spent their lives in enclosures for our entertainment were killed because of human errors. It's time to really look over the security and figure out how to prevent these things from ever happening. To have this sort of thing happen twice in two weeks resulting in animals being killed is despicable. These poor creatures were killed for our mistakes and it's time to figure out a solution. It's up to the zoos to determine how to fix this problem but I would suggest really looking over the security of these enclosures and their entry points first of all. Secondly, there clearly needs to be more staff on hand to monitor the actions of children and adults alike when visiting these enclosures. Look what we have here, another investigation proving animal cruelty is rampant within this company. Tyson is a supplier of poultry for restaurants like KFC and McDonalds in the U.S. so it is quite surprising to me being that they are so well known that they would repeatedly be caught neglecting and abusing their animals. With that being said, this also demonstrates how lackluster the governments animal protection / cruelty laws are that they've been busted for this more than once and nothing has changed.
First of all, these large chain restaurants need to take a stand against animal cruelty and cut ties with Tyson Farms. It's a well known fact that factory farmed animals generally live in abhorrent conditions during their short lives but when you mix in physical abuse and neglect, there's a serious problem. By continuing to receive their poultry these companies are condoning these actions. Being that they are large corporations, their taking a stand would be monumental in demonstrating support for better animal treatment. Secondly, the government needs to take a serious look at revamping their standards for animal treatment as well as appropriate punishment for obvious abuse and neglect. Tyson Farms has been repeatedly busted for animal cruelty yet they continue to operate without any repercussions. It's time to for the higher ups to listen to the people and crack the whip on animal cruelty. Appropriate punishment here is demanding better standards and enforcing them, fining their company for every instance of animal abuse, neglect, or torture, and shutting them down if they don't cooperate. Money makes the world go round but more people are speaking out against animal abuse and it's time for the government to hear our cries and fix these problems. Tyson Farms has gotten away with this long enough. Let's take a stand here and demand better conditions! I challenge McDonalds and KFC to do the right thing and take a stand against this type of abuse. Their voices are needed in this situation, stop worrying about money for once and worry about the countless lives lost at the hands of your suppliers! BOYCOTT TYSON FARMS! Thoughts? Comments? Well, this encompasses a lot of the meats that along with most people my age, I was eating regularly growing up. When I think of processed meats I think of anything that has to be manipulated and formed. Hot Dogs, Sausages (in some cases), and most lunch meats (Mac and cheese loaf anyone?) are processed meats. These meats have lately come under fire from the World Health Organization as having qualities that contribute to cancer. The above article is in reference to meat sales on the decline in Israel. They have recently reported a 30% drop in consumption / sales of these processed products. It's not just Israel either. Britian has reported a drop in consumption while the Netherlands are limiting meat consumption AND strongly urging vegetarian / vegan lifestyles. These drops in consumption are both a good and a bad thing. Here's why. If people are uneducated of the horrors of the meat industry they will likely revert back to eating these products at some point in the future. As the heat wears off from the World Health Organizations report, people will most likely incorporate these things slowly back into their diets without realizing it. I can't count how many times I skipped label reading and likely consumed meat during my beginning phase of being a vegetarian. I also can't count how many times I would drunkenly eat fish after a night out. These things are because I didn't know all I needed to know about the meat industry. Without further educating the public about this report of the link between process meats and cancer, without continuous promotion of a vegetarian diet, without bombardment of information and the realities of this industry, I don't feel as though it's all for the right reason. It's this crucial time when people are realizing this link to cancer that we should also try and educate them on the horrors of the meat industry. If we catch the masses in this time of reduction, there's a much better chance they will remain away from the processed meats. This could lead into a complete vegetarian / vegan lifestyle. I am happy to hear about this reduction in consumption so don't get me wrong. I simply feel like passion is what keeps us motivated. I'm passionate about animals , food, and my family, therefore I can remain meat free, entertain this blog regularly, and have a wonderful relationship with my family. That being said, if people are not passionate about why they are reducing their consumption they simply won't stick with it. Being busy does wonders for all the things we try not to do.
