ARGH! When I say things like "adopt, don't shop." , these stories are exactly the reason behind that.
In this story, kittens / young cats are being shaved and having their whiskers ripped out to mimic the appearance of more expensive, sphynx kittens. Obviously, the sellers make themselves difficult to trace and these procedures actually leave the kittens in sever pain and likely with emotional damage. The sellers in essence are not only damaging the kitten, but also ripping off customers by hundreds of dollars not to mention any unforeseen damage done by their negligence. This is horrible and must be stopped! Look, the appeal of a kitten / puppy or a specific breed of pet is certainly tempting but you must always keep in mind that there are hundreds of thousands of lovable pets waiting to be adopted at rescue shelters. Animals that could find themselves put down before ever having the chance to be loved. Buying pets supports breeders and breeding animals for profit is WRONG! These people are taking away any chance that lovable rescue pets will be adopted. I can't say this enough but avoid breeders. You're so much better off to save an animal than purchase one from someone who probably could care less about you or the animals period. HAPPY VEG

Seeing the headline of this story nauseated me immediately. "Man faces animal cruelty charges after dog thrown from 7th floor balcony." I can't even fathom doing something like this or having any kind of reason to resort to this. That poor dog hit the ground from 7 floors up, it had no chance of survival.
Honestly, I can't stand to read these stories because I know Canada could do better. I KNOW it's possible to enforce harsher penalties and improve laws to better protect animals. It's just disgusting to think that this charge will likely bring a light sentence, maybe a fine, and a ban on owning animals which is not punishment because it isn't hard to obtain an animal from a pet store or breeder without documentation. This is not punishment to suit the crime here. When you intentionally throw a living creature from 7 floors up, that is proof that you are not street worthy. This is proof that you need to be rehabilitated / imprisoned, not slapped on the wrist. We're talking murder here, but because it's an animal it will never be punished as such. I will continue to fight tirelessly to improve Canada's animal cruelty laws & protections. If I was put on this earth for even one reason, this would be it. Animals are so precious, innocent, and genuinely loving. They mean us no harm, they love, have babies, and make friends. When will this country recognize that they are more than "pets", "food", or "objects", they are family. They are living, breathing creatures just as we are. The only difference here is that our species is greedy. We take whatever we want without regard for what is necessity while animals only want to live. Why shouldn't that be reflected in their abuse or torture? It's time for change here, enough letting animals suffer every day without justice. Murder is murder. Rape is rape. Regardless of the species, this will always be true and it's about damned time our laws supported this fact. Animal abusers NEED to be taken seriously! HAPPY VEG Well, I have an update for all of you regarding my attempts to update our laws.
I spoke with my local MP and discovered that she too was working with NDPs to update several of our archaic laws but has had no success to date. Sadly, they introduced bills banning shark finning, the import of furs made from cats and dogs, and stronger punishments for puppy mills and animal abusers and were denied by our government on all fronts. Obviously, discovering this was a blow to my cause but I truly believe that perseverance will pay off. Our country is a great one but we are so sorely lacking in the animal protections department. We need our government to understand that our country cares more for animals than what is reflected by our poor laws. Determination fuels me and I will continue to work tirelessly looking for a solution to this seriously upsetting issue. HAPPY VEG |
