Canada & The Seal Hunt

Canada's annual seal hunt began early this year thanks to lobbying groups hoping to slaughter adults this year for meat and oil. Typically, younger seals are slaughtered for their fur during the hunt. Every year, approximately 60, 000 seals are slaughtered by Canadian fisherman hoping to cash in on a failing industry.

European countries are only getting stricter with their animal rights and 35 countries have already banned the import / sale of seal products. The market for these products are dwindling and that's why these groups claim to want to hunt adults this year so as to make money in other ways.
With the industry slowly caving in, the question here is why are our tax dollars funding this ridiculously unnecessary annual event? Why, as a Vegetarian and firm supporter of animal rights are my hard earned tax dollars funding something I find to be absolutely repulsive. It sickens me to think that anything of mine contributes to this horrific slaughter of innocent babies.

These babies are not "humanely" slaughtered as the government would have us believe. First of all, there's absolutely nothing humane about slaughtering something that does not want to die. Secondly, attacking the heads of the animals with ice picks and dragging them across the ice hardly reads as humane to me.

The hunt is just another example of how detached from reality our government is when considering animal rights. They refuse to acknowledge that society frowns on these sorts of activities now. They refuse to acknowledge that vegan and vegetarian lifestyles are becoming more abundant and with that, the rise of concern over our poor animal rights laws. Canada's animal rights laws are about as sad as can be. Convictions carry laughable punishments and do nothing to deter future animal cruelty.
Canada, wake the f!@k up! We project an image of peace, compassion, and empathy, yet we participate in morally questionable activities involving animals and have absolutely no regard for their rights or worth. Our laws allow molestation of animals, our laws allow repeat offenders to receive nothing short of a slap on the wrist. The fact is, our tax dollars are contributing to the slaughter of innocent babies in the name of profit. Canada is not as empathetic and peaceful as we've been lead to believe now is it?

Also, take the time to use your voice! Send your complaints into the Prime Minister's inbox(https://pm.gc.ca/eng/connect) or contact your local MP and find out what you can do to help. At this very moment, babies are being killed. We can't allow the government to think we stand for this barbaric earning of money in the name of blood.

Easter is bad for Bunnies

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/04/rabbits-easter-animal-welfare-pets-rescue-bunnies/
Easter means a lot of different things to different people. If you're a religious person, the sentiment is obvious while if you're a child, it's about the baskets filled with wonderful sweet treats. If you're a bunny, easter is a very sad time full of abandonment. Bunnies are the third most adopted pet in America and also the third most abandoned.

As the article states, people have many misconceptions about bunnies in regards to their care, their lifespans, and the importance of providing them with a loving home. They are not gifts to be given at Easter to children who may or may not understand how to care for them. They are living beings that require love, patience, and care.

Bunnies can live up to 10 or more years and are not a gift to give to someone who is not ready for that kind of commitment. Unfortunately, they are given up all too frequently because people are not ready to commit themselves to these precious little animals and therefore end up at adoption centers soon after Easter is over.

If you're considering getting a bunny, please consider not only the commitment you must be willing to make but consider the bunnies themselves. These beautiful, adorable animals are not fly by night gifts, they are living beings who will provide you with love and lots of fun. Do your homework before adopting so that you are prepared for the challenges ahead. Know their diets, study their actions, and be ready for everything that comes along with owning a pet. Don't let these bunnies suffer because of our own selfishness.

Make sure to spread the word this season! Bunnies are pets, not gifts. Show them some love <3

Canada's animal cruelty convictions are laughable!

http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/pei-woman-found-guilty-of-animal-cruelty-banned-from-owning-animals-for-5-years/ar-BBzlEbk?li=AAggv0m
When a story like this comes out, I am reminded how important it is for me to continue to fight for animal rights in Canada.

A P.E.I. woman was found guilty of animal cruelty charges stemming from an investigation of her property back in January. She was handed a 5 year ban on owning animals, 2 years probation, and a $100 dollar fine to be paid over two years. Sounds fair no?

The problem with this ruling is that this woman has already been banned from owning animals in 2 other provinces. This likely means there were animal cruelty charges brought upon her in these places as well resulting in the bans. She's a repeat offender, someone who has been repeatedly busted for animal cruelty. Does the law even take that into consideration?

Animal cruelty simply does not come with appropriate punishment in Canada. Our animal  rights laws are so severely outdated that animals have virtually no rights when it comes to the law. How the hell can you be busted for animal cruelty over and over again and pay a fine of $100!?! The value of an animal's life is worth so much more than 50 dollars a year. It's so ridiculous to think that in 2017, someone can repeatedly put animals in harm's way and be slapped on the wrist.

When will our Government step up and make animals a priority? It's been over 100 years since our animal cruelty laws have been updated. 100 years! With vegetarian & vegan lifestyles becoming more prevalent, there is a shift in the way our community wants to see animals treated. They are not commodities, items, or gifts. They are family, and it's about time that people who mistreat or abuse them are punished accordingly.

CANADA - WAKE UP!
