Animals are friends, not food

Canada - Two Big Bills heading to the House of Commons

www.cbc.ca/news/politics/tasker-whale-dolphin-captivity-canada-senate-bill-1.4876136
Canada is slowly coming around to the world of animal rights with two new bills passed by Senate that will now head for the House of Commons. Canada is lacking in the animal rights department, something I've brought to light several times throughout  my posts. One of the biggest hiccups in our animal rights laws is our lackluster law banning bestiality. For those of you who don't know, bestiality is classified only as the act of penetration leaving innocent animals vulnerable to perversions that include genital touching and oral sex acts. This is probably the easiest of the laws to change based solely on ethics but it remains in tact until the government realizes that it's tarnishing out reputation significantly. Bad news aside, let's take a look at the two bills heading for the higher ups!
Picture
First up, the bill to ban the captivity and breeding of cetaceans like whales and dolphins. This bill is a long time in the making after years of outrage over parks like Sea World or Marine Land where cetaceans are kept for entertainment purposes. These beautiful creatures typically live in oceans with thousands of miles of space to roam, play, and live whereas when kept in captivity, they are kept in what can only be described as bathtubs with very little space to live. Considering the intelligence of these creatures, it's completely abhorrent to think they are held in these tiny prisons, forced to perform tricks for paying human customers.
This bill is widely supported by MP's across the boards calling the holding of these intelligent creatures in concrete tanks perverse and cruel. Obviously, the only people speaking out against the bill would be those involved the two primary targets, Marine Land and the Vancouver Aquarium. Arguments like it will hurt science and research or the animals are happy when it's time for feeding, fall on deaf ears to animal activists who have long recognized the cruelty involved with housing these cetaceans.

I wholly support this bill. I've never been to Marine Land and would never go because I know enough of the perils these dolphins and whales endure to entertain us. There is no argument regarding their happiness when you look at the tanks they live in and compare that to their natural habitat. I mean think about being confined to your bathtub everyday when you could essentially move about freely throughout your neighborhood, town, or city. There's no argument in my opinion that can justify keeping these intelligent, curious creatures in tanks.

The bill would allow these places to keep the cetaceans they currently have but would prohibit them from breeding or accepting new cetaceans to the park. There is a suggested fine of $200, 000 for violations which is set high to be a deterrent. I truly hope this bill makes it through the House of Commons and we see the end of cetaceans in captivity!
The second bill heading for the House of Commons is the banning of imported shark fins. Interestingly, Canada is the third largest importer of shark fins behind only Hong Kong and China where shark fin soup is popular.

Shark population has dropped nearly 80% over the past 50 years  according to this story which is alarming when you consider the vastness of the ocean. We have done significant damage to shark numbers putting them at risk of being endangered and inevitably, extinct.

The fact is, shark fin soup is considered a delicacy and frankly, one that comes at a price. This is an obvious bill that needs to be put through because frankly, there's absolutely no necessity in the soup. One cannot argue for the importance of the soup without sounding ignorant when you consider the amount of sharks killed every year for something so trivial.

Big Fur News

worldanimalnews.com/los-angeles-may-become-the-4th-city-in-california-to-ban-the-sale-of-fur/
worldanimalnews.com/breaking-coach-is-the-latest-luxury-brand-to-go-fur-free-ask-them-to-also-ban-shearling-mohair-angora/
It's a good day in the world of animal news today y'all as I'm reporting on two big stories involving fur. You guys know my opinion of fur, it's a completely unnecessary product that stems from the abhorrent abuse of animals. These animals are bred solely for fur often times living in deplorable conditions, fattened to three or four times their natural size to produce more pelt. When you consider that fashion and technology has come such a long way, there's absolutely no need in using animals any longer. That's why I'm so happy to report on these big stories :D
Picture
My first bit of good news takes us to Los Angeles which could soon become the fourth city in California to completely ban fur joining San Francisco, West Hollywood, and Berkeley. The bill to ban fur will now be presented to city council which will then decide if it should go further, eventually landing on the mayor's desk for final approval. If approved, the sale and production of products made using fur will be completely banned by January 2020.

“It is time to move past the archaic practice of killing animals for goods,” Council member Blumenfield said at the time. “Los Angeles must be a leader in this effort to stop the unnecessary killing of animals and finally eliminate this vile market.”
California has a reputation for being a leader in the animal rights movement. Californians reputably care for animals and their well being so it is a natural progression that these communities look to ban the use of fur. It's time to put an end to an industry that relies solely on breeding, manipulating, torturing, and skinning animals for fashion.
Coach is the latest big name fashion label to commit to banning fur in time for their newest product launch. This includes fox, rabbit, mink, and coyote furs which will no longer be available through the Coach label.

It's been a big year for going fur free with DVF fashions most recently committing to banning fur from their fashion label and the London Fashion Week banning fur from the runway for the very first time this year as well. It is incredibly evident that the world is catching on quickly to the needless suffering of the animals used for fur and the lack of necessity fur truly holds in fashion.
Picture
Fur has always creeped me out I mean, when you think about famed serial killer Ted Bundy who had a penchant for manufacturing apparel and home wares made of the skinned remains of his murdered victims, what's the difference really? How is that any more loathsome than wearing fur? The skin of the animal is still attached to the fur like, you're literally wearing a corpse. How in the hell can anyone honestly think that that's appropriate? It's legitimately repulsive to me.

I'm so happy to report on these stories because I truly believe withing the next 5 years, we will see a complete ban on fur across the globe. Am I being optimistic? perhaps, but these stories keep coming and in abundance so I believe we are on the right track to see the end of fur products worldwide. Being optimistic is all you can be when it comes to the suffering of animals, we must continue to sign the petitions, share the stories, and report on them continuously to demonstrate that we as a global community care about animals and no longer want to see them utilized for shit like animal testing for cosmetics or fur for coats and bags.

The End of Animal Derived Gelatin?

10/25/2018

www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Article/2018/10/25/Geltor-raises-18.2m-gears-up-for-2020-launch-of-animal-free-collagen-proteins-for-the-food-industry
Geltor, a San Leandro based start up producing collagen proteins without the use of animals, is gearing up for a 2020 launch after successfully raising 18.2 million dollars to fund their business. What does this mean? Well, for those of you who are unaware, gelatin is a collagen based ingredient used in a variety of grocery products including various candy's and yogurts. It is extracted from the bones and cartilage of animals, specifically pigs and cows and is quite disgusting to think about. After learning of gelatin in college and being a Vegetarian for almost 14 years at that point, I immediately stopped consuming everything I knew that had gelatin in it as an ingredient which meant abandoning my favourite candies and reading the labels of every yogurt I intended to purchase.

The company claims there are many reasons why the food industry is looking for an animal free alternative, specifically vegans and vegetarians who refuse to purchase these products. They also suggest that although there are gelatin free candies and yogurts that take advantage of vegan alternatives like agar agar, the consistency of the product is not the same. With their animal free proteins, they will be able to adapt the collagen like substance to suit their specific needs giving them more freedom and opportunity with their products.

What I love about this is that it demonstrates a general shift in the consumer demand in today's society. More and more people are turning to vegetarian / vegan diets or at least trying to source more ethical products. We are seeing big name fashion labels turning away from fur. We are seeing more and more companies turning their backs on animal testing, more vegetarian and vegan products showing up at the markets. There is a demand for these products that was not evident 10 or 15 years ago which is great news.

Will we see an animal product free environment in our lifetime? Who's to say, but I have faith that we will see an even bigger shift in the ethics of our nations. I can already see a big difference now than even 5 years ago. The truth is, people are realizing that there is happiness outside of what they know of animal products. There is an environmental benefit to ditching meat, there is an ethical benefit to turning away from fur etc. These facts alone demonstrate that we as a global nation are coming to the realization that animals do not deserve the fate we have dedicated to them and that alone is a victory and hey, if this means that despite my desire to avoid processed sugars I can eat a fricken gummy bear again, I'm ok with that!

Blake Fischer forced to resign after worldwide backlash :D

worldanimalnews.com/breaking-idaho-fish-game-commissioner-blake-fischer-forced-to-resign-after-sharing-appalling-trophy-hunting-photos/
This my friends is what the power of coming together and speaking out against blatant disrespect of animals can do. A few days ago, Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner Blake Fischer shared some abhorrent photos of himself with some animals he killed while on a hunting trip with his wife in Africa. We've all seen these types of photos, you know the ones where the assholes are standing behind these beautiful animals smiling away like they've accomplished some great feat while the corpse of the animal lays before them? There was however, a major problem with the photos the Mr. Fischer decided to share.
Picture
Photo taken from World Animal News
Among the photos he shared was this one to the left, smiling as he proudly shows off the entire family of baboons he killed. You see and hear that correctly, an entire family. Not only does he kill the entire family including a child, but he then decides to stage their corpses in some kind of perverted set up that really shows off their family bond. Wow, what an incredible thing to be proud of huh?

Well, immediate backlash followed and hundreds of thousands of people started sharing the photos urging him to resign from his position with the Idaho Fish and Game Commission. I too shared his photos on Twitter and also contacted the Idaho Fish and Game Commission to plead with them to let him go over his decision not only to hunt an entire family of baboons, but an  endangered giraffe and leopard among others. He claimed he did so ethically but c'mon, we all know that's a load of shit. What's ethical exactly about killing an entire family? What a scumbag!
Needless to say, the backlash was swift and Mr. Fischer was forced to resign from his position today. If the Idaho Fish and Game Commission suggests you resign despite the fact that it's kind of a hunting protectionist group, then you know you fu<ked up. Looks good on him and I hope in the future he thinks about his actions before proudly showing off his "kills" with his perverted smile in the background.

This is definite proof that if we all come together and speak out on something, our voices can and will be heard. Together, the world was able to pressure him in to resigning after something he thought he did that was ethical. Let me remind you all, trophy hunting is not ethical unless you lack empathy or compassion. There is nothing ethical about killing animals that don't want to die, specifically those that are already endangered. Enough is enough here, we must continue to speak out on trophy hunting until we see the end of it before we unfortunately see the end of animals like giraffes, elephants, leopards, and lions.

Deplorable conditions at beef farm responsible for supplying Costco and In & Out Burger

10/13/2018

worldanimalnews.com/breaking-mass-dumping-ground-of-cows-shocking-conditions-at-ray-mar-farms-and-ranch-in-northern-california-exposed-in-new-dxe-investigation/
Another day, another factory farm exposed for having less than stellar conditions. This time, we're headed to Ray-Mar Farms in California where activist group DxE filmed and exposed some gruesome findings on the farm that supplies beef to Costco and In & Out burger among others. The undercover filming exposed what I can only describe as complete and utter neglect and disrespect of the animals and the products that they claim to be proud of.

Their findings exposed baby calves sitting in cages barely bigger than their bodies. These poor babies were clearly suffering from respiratory issues thanks to the stench of ammonia in the air. The worst part, a short distance away from where the babies were being kept was a dumping ground for corpses. DxE discovered several cow and calf corpses piled on top of each other covered in maggots and emitting a foul stench into the air which was likely also contributing to the breathing issues the baby calves were suffering from holed up such a short distance away from this graveyard.

Despite Prop 2 having been in effect in California now for over 3 years which bans the confinement of certain farm animals to cages where they cannot freely stand up, lay down, or turn around, there has yet to be a prosecution under this law despite several undercover exposures. Californian is one of the states in the United States of America that has truly demonstrated that they have a genuine care for animals which is why atrocities like this are often shielded from the public. Without these undercover busts, these sorts of cruel treatment to animals would never be exposed for what they were.
Picture
Can you imagine the horror and emotional trauma these babies are suffering from watching corpse after corpse be dumped only feet away from them as they struggle to breathe thanks to the poor conditions they are left to sit in? What a horrible existence for these curious, innocent animals that have absolutely no hope for life.

My thing is, if it's not this one, it's going to be another one. There aren't enough activists in the world to expose all of the factory farmed abuses happening every day, every minute for that matter. Every day there are pigs, piglets, chicks and chickens, calves and cows, sheep, lamb etc. being tortured emotionally, confined to areas no larger than their bodies, suffering immensely as they wait to die. These are facts.

If people continue to buy factory farmed meat, these kinds of awful things will continue to happen every day. The only way to stop this is to adopt a vegetarian / vegan lifestyle or start heading to your local butcher for your meat. I would rather we all went veggie but that's unrealistic of me. Go to your local butcher because you know where these animals are coming from, in what ways they are treated, and in what conditions they live in. You support a local business at the same time while also turning your back on the cruelest industry on the planet.
As the world continues to move away from fur, cosmetics testing, and the banning of the dog and meat trade, we mustn't turn our backs on the meat industry. Factory farmed meat is destroying our planet every single day, this is a fact. Factory farmed animals suffer from the minute they are born until the minute they are killed, this is a fact. If we continue to contribute to factory farmed meat, we contribute to the biggest problem our planet currently faces.

World's Second Largest Beauty Brand joins fight to end Cosmetics Animal testing Worldwide

10/12/2018

worldanimalnews.com/breaking-worlds-2nd-largest-beauty-brand-unilever-announces-unprecedented-move-to-help-support-global-ban-on-animal-testing-for-cosmetics/
In what is being described as an unprecedented move, Unilever, maker of such beauty brands as Dove, Degree, and TREsemme, has joined Humane Society International in a campaign to end cosmetics animal testing globally by 2023. Recognizing that technology today makes animal testing completely outdated, cruel, and unnecessary, Unilever has pledged their support to ending cosmetics testing across the board.

The European Union has banned cosmetics tested on animals since 2013 with countries like India, New Zealand, and several states in the United States and Brazil also banning the cruel practice. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of countries and states that are still utilizing this barbaric method of testing for cosmetics. Also amazing, their brand of Dove beauty products will receive the PETA stamp of approval beginning January 2019 indicating that they do not and will not test their products on animals. This ensures vegans and vegetarians looking to purchase cruelty free products will be able to easily do so thanks to the PETA stamp of approval.

Animals used for cosmetics testing suffer immensely for the sake of  beauty products. Skin irritation tests involve shaving of the skin and applying various products to the skin looking for rashes, blistering, or irritation, all of which cause unnecessary harm and suffering to animals. Other tests include skin allergy tests and force feeding tests that can monitor the potential harm for weeks or months inevitably leaving these animals suffering throughout the entire duration.

These poor animals can suffer from open sores, skin irritation, organ damage, swollen eyes or blindness, among other ailments that they do not deserve. I remember a quote I read from a former Cancer research doctor who stated that we have cured cancer in mice for decades, the results do not translate to human success stories, this to me sums it all up. Animals will not react the same way to products that we do, we are not the same! There is absolutely no excuse for the torture and emotional distress these animals endure for their short lives. Not to mention, they are rarely given pain medication and when they are deemed used up, they are asphyxiated, decapitated, or have their necks broken to end their lives. What a completely disrespectful manner of slaughtering animals that we deem hold no value any longer. Can you imagine being tested on for months only to have some piece of shit researcher put a bag over your head and throw you out? Despicable!

This move by Unilever to help end cosmetics testing globally is a big step in the right direction for animals. Along with this, more and more big name fashion labels are turning their backs on fur. There is a shift in the way animals are being perceived and these big companies are taking note. Wtheter they're doing it for their own ethics or morals or because they recognize this shift is to be determined but frankly, doesn't matter to me. I don't care why you stop abusing animals, I just care that you do <3

Another major fashion label turning away from fur

10/9/2018

worldanimalnews.com/breaking-diane-von-furstenbergs-dvf-announces-plans-to-cut-fur-from-its-new-collections/
Diane Von Furstenberg is the newest big name fashion label turning their backs on fur with their new collections. Not only are they ceasing fur in their new lines, they are also joining with PETA and The Humane Society of the United States to help end the exploitation of animals used for fur. This is major news for the fur industry and also a big step in the right direction for one of the largest and most recognizable labels in the world. Recognizing the environmental impact as well as the torture these animals endure for the sake of fashion, the company said they can no longer continue to support utilizing fur.

They join a growing list of big name labels who are turning their backs on using fur. The fact is y'all, fur is repulsive. There's nothing sexy, fashionable, or upscale, about wearing the skinned remains of a once living animal that endured mental, emotional, and physical torture right up until the minute it was slaughtered. These animals are confined to the tiniest of cages often times crammed in in multiples, they live amongst their own feces and urine which cause infections that are most often left untreated, and they suffer mentally and emotionally as they attempt to find a way to escape their living hell. Tere's nothing fashionable about contributing to the needless suffering these animals endure.

As these big name labels turn their backs on fur, my hope is that other big name label continue to join in the fight to end the fur trade entirely. One can argue until they're blue in the face about the necessity of meat but there is absolutely no argument for fur. What can you possibly say to defend the use of fur? Our own sickening desire to look a certain way trumps the suffering of animals bred solely for their fur. As I've reported before, these animals are not wholly used, it's not as though they are then used for meat as well. Their corpses are disregarded as trash the minute their pelts are removed, it's a despicable industry that needs to be wholly shut down.

Big congrats to DVF fashions and big thanks for joining in the fight to end the fur trade <3

5 more lions poisoned and killed at a South African Wildlife Park

10/6/2018

worldanimalnews.com/urgent-help-needed-to-identify-murders-who-poisoned-killed-5-lions-at-a-south-african-wildlife-park/
For the second time this year, lions were poisoned and killed by unknown assailants after cutting their way through protective fences at a South African Wildlife Park. 5 of the lions were poisoned and one of them had their paws and face cut off during this horrific event. What a sick and despicable thing to happen to these beautiful creatures on a protected wildlife park where they should be safe from shit like this.

What I can't seem to understand is, what would somebody have to gain from doing something like this? What exactly does this do for someone? In my mind, it's a sick and twisted perversion that makes someone want to do something like this. This person or persons needs to face criminal charges for what they've done and I hope that the punishment when they are caught is appropriate for what they've done to these poor animals.

I find myself wondering, if this sort of thing has already happened before, why are there not better protections for these animals? Clearly a wire fence surrounding the property is easy enough to infiltrate and clearly there is evidence that there are people who are sick enough to try and commit this sort of atrocity, so why the lackluster security? These animals rely on the owners and operators of this park to protect them and care for them and unfortunately, they did not hold up their end of the bargain. As I said, after the first situation involving the poisoning of 6 lions, there should have been added security right away. Whether that was in the form of additional cameras and security, or an added security feature that amps up the wire fence surrounding the enclosure, it should have been done.

It saddens me to think that there are people out there who get their kicks out of poisoning and playing around with the corpses of lions especially considering these beautiful animals are at risk of going extinct if they are not better protected. Shame on these people and my only hope is that they are caught and handed the worst punishment available to them.

My Email to Mayor Gates of Kingman Arizona

10/5/2018

Dear Mayor Gates,

It is my understanding that the Big O Coyote Hunt will take place this weekend involving the slaughter of hundreds of animals including foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions. Upon first reading that there were points allocated to the specific animals, I almost thought of this to be some kind of joke until I investigated further. I am appalled and horrified at the idea that a community would engage in this sort of activity in the name of fun. There is a perverse nature to any kind of sport where someone gets off on taking the life of a living creature that simply wants to live. All of these animals have complex personalities and relationships that will cease after this weekend if this horrendous activity is permitted to commence.

Humans have a salacious need to demonstrate their dominance over other species. This salacious desire is the exact reason animals like elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, rhinos, and orcas, currently face the risk of extinction. If we continue to promote these sorts of activities as fun, we will see the end of some of the most majestic species that have ever walked our planet. Promoting slaughter in the name of fun is the opposite of the morals and ethics we should be instilling in the children who are our future. There is nothing fun about shooting animals and leaving them horrified and in fear if not already dead, until the moment they are finished off. For goodness sake, I beg of you to reconsider this event before 100's of animals are left to die in the worst circumstances. There is absolutely nothing humane about killing a living creature that doesn't want to die and I hope that you too will agree that our future must promote love and respect of all living beings as opposed to a future that promotes violence, bloodshed, and torture in the name of perverted fun.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Charbonneau

Arizona - Making a Game of Slaughtering Animals

10/5/2018

worldanimalnews.com/urgent-calls-emails-needed-now-to-help-stop-coyote-killing-contest-from-taking-place-this-weekend-in-kingman-arizona/
Upon first reading this story, I almost thought this was some kind of a joke, it's that unbelievable to me. Beginning Saturday, a city in Arizona will begin a "game' that involves killing as many animals as possible. You heard that right folks, there are rewards for those who kill the most animals and receive the most points. The points are allocated based on the animal you are killing. Foxes will earn you 1 point, coyotes will earn you 2 points, bobcats will earn you 3 points, and finally, mountain lions will get you 4 points. Doesn't this sound like some kind of Hunger Games otherworldly nonsense??
Picture
Let me just start with what's so obviously despicable about this. When I was growing up, the kind of games we played were innocent and engaging. We played board games with our families, barbies or soldiers with our friends, hung out at the park and played on the swings, or enjoyed sports. These activities were truly fun and certainly never promoted violence or taking pleasure in the ending of another living being's life. I am absolutely disgusted at the fact that Kingman Arizona is marketing this as some sort of game. There is nothing about this that is innocent, in fact, it is truly the opposite. This is an activity that promotes violence, slaughter, and torture, all in the name of fun. What the hell is wrong with these people?
What I find especially disturbing is the allocating of points and the rewards based on how many points you acquire. What kind of a bloodbath is this going to be? Can you visualize this? people running around with guns happily shooting at anything that will earn them fucking points? It almost sounds too unrealistic to be true, but the fact is, it's true and it's happening this weekend.
Picture
There are so many things that i could say about something like this but I've already said it all when it comes to hunting. If you're the kind of person who takes pleasure in ending another living being's life, you probably have other emotional or mental issues that are going unnoticed. Every single one of these animals has only one desire, to live. What the hell gives any of these people the right to decide that all of these animals deserve to die? Humans continue to demonstrate their salacious greed and their continued demonstration of dominance among other species manipulating the planet to their advantage. We have absolutely no right to go out and decide what lives and what dies and we certainly have no right to make a fucking game out of killing as many animals as possible. What kind of world are we living in here?

"It is morally, scientifically, and ethically reprehensible to slaughter animals for some kind of perverted thrill."

I am extremely opposed to this and although there is limited time to speak out, there is still limited time. Head to the original story at the top of this post from World Animal News and follow the instructions at the bottom of the post to send the mayor emails or phone calls politely urging her to reconsider this atrocious sport.

Limited time or not, any voice still needs to be heard before this god awful game commences and hundreds and thousands of animals are killed all in the name of fun.
