A local farm sanctuary suffered a tremendous loss after a fire that started throughout the night destroyed their barn and took the lives of some of their precious animals who were unable to be saved. One of the staff members awoke to the cries of one of their donkeys, alerting them that there was danger but by the time she had got to the barn, it was engulfed in flames preventing her from entering and rescuing any of the 7 animals trapped inside.
Charlotte's rescues animals from the farm industry among others and rehabilitates them on the property giving them the opportunity to live a quiet, happy, and natural life surrounded by loving, compassionate people who dedicate themselves to the well being of animals. To date, they have rescued a variety of animals including guinea hens, goats, turkeys, donkey, and dogs / cats caring for them all on the property. This is a tragic loss of life, property, and I'm sure, moral, which is why it's important to help these organizations that rely on the generosity of compassionate people, especially in their time of need. If you would like to make a donation to Charlotte's Freedom Farm, follow the link below this to their GO FUND ME which has already raised over $20, 000 dollars. Every dollar donated goes toward helping them rebuild and continue to care for the animals on their property. The United States Environment Protection Agency is conducting an Ecological Risk Assessment of the use of anticoagulant rodenticides in poisoning and killing rats. The risk assessment is used to determine whether the pros outweigh the cons in terms of what these rodenticides are capable of and are contributing to in the environment. Let me just start by going over the 3 major reasons I can tell you that rodenticides are ineffective and incredibly dangerous to ecosystems.
When you look at a healthy and balanced ecosystem, it consists of a healthy amount of herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and plant life. All of these contribute to the effectiveness of an ecosystem and when we start losing one or another, it can throw things off kilter which contributes to a much larger problem. For example, the very last bobcat is poisoned and dies as a result of consuming prey that came into contact with rodenticides, now the balance of prey / predator is off kilter. This can lead to an over abundance of herbivorous animals which then trickles down to the plant life. All of these things are deeply intertwined and when we start indiscriminately poisoning animals, we are contributing to the decline of a healthy ecosystem.
There is no justification for rodenticides. It has been proven countless times that they are ineffective and if we don't ban them entirely, we will continue to see non-target animals like bobcats, coyotes, and foxes dropping dead after coming into contact with poisoned animals. It's a cruel fate for animals that were never intended to be targeted. Because of this fact alone, there should be no argument in defense of these poisons. When you're looking for a solution to a purported problem, you have to identify whether the risks outweigh the intended purpose and in the case of rodenticides, there is no argument. These poisons are killing animals and disrupting the balance of ecosystems and habitats. Ban rodenticides. Follow the link at the top of this post for information on who to contact and how you can express your disapproval of rodenticides before July 6th. Together, we can get rodenticides banned in the United States and hopefully, the world. HAPPY VEG |
