Animal Advocates in Las Vegas protest Foie Gras and promote Veganism

Being that this is the second protest in 4 days, it's obvious that animal advocacy groups in Vegas are determined to promote veganism while also speaking out against foie gras. Maintaining a peaceful, legal protest, Animal Action Las Vegas spent the day protesting outside of a restaurant that featured foie gras on the menu. Their message was clear, foie gras is not a delicacy, rather a dish that comes from an abused duck / goose that shouldn't be available to be sold.

Foie gras is a controversial dish that has sparked quite a debate since animal advocacy groups started protesting against it. Foie gras is derived from a goose or duck that has been force fed large quantities of food over the course of approximately two weeks. This forced feeding increases the size of their liver supposedly making it extra rich upon consumption. Ultimately, the birds are slaughtered for their livers which are then shipped off to restaurants that sell them as some kind of upscale, luxury food.

There are two sides to this story with many experts suggesting it is perfectly humane because the birds do not have a gag reflex and therefore do not feel discomfort as they are force fed obscene amounts of fatty corn. Watching the videos however, one would assume the birds do not enjoy this forced feeding and suffer ailments because of this. Regardless of how you view it, it is not a natural activity the birds would engage in if not otherwise forced.

There are several countries across the globe that have banned production of foie gras including most of the Nordic countries, Germany, Australia, and Israel. In Asia, the import AND production of foie gras is prohibited. With so many countries turning away from foie gras, it's obvious that the methods to produce it are seen as abusive and cruel. 

I commend the work of Animal Action Las Vegas for their efforts in exposing the cruel practices of foie gras while also promoting a plant based lifestyle. Peaceful protests are a great way to spread a message whilst maintaining a stand of peacefulness and empathy.
