When a story like this comes out, I am reminded how important it is for me to continue to fight for animal rights in Canada.
A P.E.I. woman was found guilty of animal cruelty charges stemming from an investigation of her property back in January. She was handed a 5 year ban on owning animals, 2 years probation, and a $100 dollar fine to be paid over two years. Sounds fair no? The problem with this ruling is that this woman has already been banned from owning animals in 2 other provinces. This likely means there were animal cruelty charges brought upon her in these places as well resulting in the bans. She's a repeat offender, someone who has been repeatedly busted for animal cruelty. Does the law even take that into consideration? Animal cruelty simply does not come with appropriate punishment in Canada. Our animal rights laws are so severely outdated that animals have virtually no rights when it comes to the law. How the hell can you be busted for animal cruelty over and over again and pay a fine of $100!?! The value of an animal's life is worth so much more than 50 dollars a year. It's so ridiculous to think that in 2017, someone can repeatedly put animals in harm's way and be slapped on the wrist. When will our Government step up and make animals a priority? It's been over 100 years since our animal cruelty laws have been updated. 100 years! With vegetarian & vegan lifestyles becoming more prevalent, there is a shift in the way our community wants to see animals treated. They are not commodities, items, or gifts. They are family, and it's about time that people who mistreat or abuse them are punished accordingly. CANADA - WAKE UP! HAPPY VEG
