A ship carrying 43 crew members and approximately 5, 800 cows capsized in the East China sea after distress signals were sent entering an area affected by Typhoon Maysak. Unfortunately, it is being reported that only 1 crew member survived leaving 42 crew members and all 5, 800 cows dead in this tragic YET PREVENTABLE accident.
Why are we still allowing this to continue knowing the dangers involved with transporting this amount of live animals? One could argue that the ship going down was not planned of course, but throwing cows into an enclosed and crammed area where they can barely move or eat was planned and is completely immoral. Profit over animal livelihood is something that activists have been exposing and fighting against for decades. If we continue to look at animals as nothing more than products, there will never be change and animals will continue to suffer tremendously as we exploit them for our own ambitions.
The only solution is to ban live animal exports. There is no excuse for putting thousands of animals in harms way. There is no excuse for allowing a ship carrying thousands of potentially pregnant cows to enter an area that has been hammered by a typhoon. Why didn't the ship or organizers of this live export delay their travels knowing the current weather conditions? The answer is simple, because animals mean nothing in the scheme of things when we consider profits and this is yet another example of how our profit driven motives have put thousands of innocent animals in harms way. We need a ban on live animal exports across the globe. How many ships have to capsize killing thousands of innocent animals before people recognize that this is unsafe? How many reports of unsafe and unhealthy conditions must emerge before our eyes are opened to the horrors of live animal exports? Read the full story by clicking on the link at the top of this post. Finland is moving one step closer to a full ban on fur farming after the largest party in Finland historically voted to work towards ending fur farming in both Finland and across the EU. The Social Democratic Party of Finland, whose leader is also the current Prime Minister, voted in favour of ending fur farming in Finland as well as working towards a full ban on fur farming across the EU. This commitment marks a historical change in Finland as it is reportedly one of the largest suppliers of fox furs to the United States.
Several countries have enacted bans on fox fur farming while still allowing the farming of minks. Some countries have banned the production of fur but still allow the import from other countries. This hypocritical stance on fur farming is contradictory to what the general public feels about fur farming. In fact, in various surveys across the globe, 60 - 85% of people surveyed in their respective countries agreed that fur farming was cruel and should be banned. The responsibility falls on the governments of these countries to enact these bans.
Fur farming is despicable and exploits animals to the highest degree. Animals crammed into cages, living among their own feces, often with untreated illnesses and lesions. Bludgeoned or electrocuted to preserve their furs while others watch in horror, petrified that they could be next. There's absolutely no redeeming qualities about an industry that abuses and tortures animals to this degree. As the world continues to move in a more compassionate and green direction, there is simply no place for fur farming as we move forward as a civilization. It's simple, commit to a full ban within a 3 year period. In that 3 year period, governments provide fur farmers money to phase out fur farming in favour of other lucrative and responsible farming, also providing training if necessary to allow fur farmers an opportunity to integrate more smoothly. There's no excuse for our continued exploitation of innocent animals for fur. What was once a symbol of wealth is now regarded as disgusting, exploitative, and gaudy. We have grown as a civilization to recognize that fur is unnecessary and now it's time for our governments to fall in line with our beliefs / morals and commit to going fur free. The future is fur free and every day we are one step closer to seeing the end of the mistreatment of animals like rabbits, fox, and minks. HAPPY VEG A Japanese cargo ship crashed into a reef off the coast of Mauritius spilling approximately 1, 000 tons of oil into the sea. Now, dolphins have begun to wash up on the shore, dying as a result of the oil spilled into their habitat. Now, the people of Mauritius have taken to the streets in protest of the Government's inaction in regards to the spill and holding the Japanese ship accountable. The protests are demanding the Government investigate why the Japanese ship had veered so far off course and secondly, why the Government has not done more to investigate the spill. They are calling on the Government to be more transparent in their handling of this crisis and to take appropriate action in dealing with this crisis that requires immediate and swift attention. Now that 39 dolphins have since washed up on the shore, it couldn't be more imperative that investigations into the accident take place. The citizens of Mauritius recognize the importance of the ocean and its health and have an ominous feeling that these poor dolphins are only the first round of casualties as a result of this horrendous oil spill.
Another thing that I can't help but take away from this story is that the recent go ahead from the Trump administration to drill in the arctic is so potentially dangerous and irresponsible. This oil spill is the perfect example of what damage can be done to an ecosystem if something like this happens. The arctic is pristine and untouched and the species there have not yet had to deal with constant human presence. This will undoubtedly disrupt their livelihoods and cause serious implications to their survival. Secondly, an oil spill in the arctic would have catastrophic effects on the wildlife of this habitat. Polar bears would see their food sources decimated as they die off from the spill. Endangered species like whales and cetaceans would die as they were displaced because of such a spill.
Our continued search for resources is destroying our planet. Our carelessness is destroying our planet. Animals are dying off because of our selfishness. At a time when our planet is already facing such uncertainty because of climate change, we need to be doing more to protect it. We needn't be looking for new ways to destroy it in order to benefit ourselves. If we cannot recognize the damage we are capable of causing and what we have already done, I fear it's too late to save our planet. We are on track to witness the extinction of so many recognized and revered species'. Learn more about the oil spill in Mauritius by clicking on the link at the top of this post. HAPPY VEG |
