California has become the very first U.S. State to ban fur trapping after signing the Wildlife Protection Act of 2019. The act puts an end to the centuries old practice of trapping and cruelly killing native animals like gray foxes, coyotes, badgers, otters, and mink, all of which are typically skinned and sent to foreign markets. This act will prevent future trapping and killing contributing to a healthy ecosystem.
By enacting this ban, fur trapping will lose all of its subsidies effectively putting an end to an industry that was already generating very little income. This on top of the fact that it had lead to the extinction of wolves and wolverines in the area and the decline of otters, badgers, and other native animals, it is evident that there is simply no place for it any longer. Animals killed for their fur are often killed in an extremely cruel manner that involves ensuring their pelts are kept in tact and in good form for the products they are intended for. This includes gassing, strangling, or shooting animals, all of which causes them immeasurable stress and anguish leading up to their deaths.
California recognizes that animals are already under siege by the White House which has repeatedly demonstrated a total lack of empathy for the plight animals currently face in the wild. Habitat loss, climate change, human encroachment, livestock protection, and illegal poaching are already putting animals at risk without including unnecessary fur trapping as well, As I've reported before, the US has repeatedly worked against what's best for animals by rolling back endangered species act protections, failing to properly protect animals facing immediate danger of extinction, and allowing trophies into the country from animals that are currently endangered. This Wildlife Protection Act is a step in the right direction inn protecting animals and also sending out the message that animal conservation is important to the population despite what the government may think. I hope this leads to more states adopting this policy. Fur has no place in our society and it's time for a global ban on something so unnecessary. HAPPY VEG
