California Votes to Put Greater Restrictions on Rodenticides

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed bill AB 1788, The California Ecosystems Protection Act into law which will put more restrictions on the use of rodenticides and protect the state's wildlife. This news comes off the heels of a story I reported last week about a bobcat that inadvertently came into contact with rodenticides ultimately leading to its death. 

Rodenticides are an outdated and cruel approach to managing the rodent population. Rodents who consume these poisons can take two to three days to perish from the poisons. During the dying process, they become disoriented and unable to escape predators making them an easy target. Animals like foxes, coyotes, and bobcats will consume these rodents ultimately ending up poisoned themselves. This leads to three days of slow, agonizing torture until they too will perish from consuming these poisons. 

Rodenticides are indiscriminate and kill non target animals which makes it clear that these poisons are ineffective in managing rodent populations. California's wildlife are suffering at the hands of these poisons which has sparked activists to speak out against rodenticides generating necessary attention to the perils wild animals face at the hands of rodenticides.

The bill will heavily restrict the use of rodenticides essentially protecting innocent animals from days of agonizing torture. This is proof that activism works! So much attention was brought to this issue and California's Governor took appropriate action. If we continue to fight, we will see results! This is exceptional news for California's wildlife!
