Canada - An Embarrassment in the World of Animal Rights

Canada presents itself as a nation that is compassionate, mild mannered, and empathetic to the struggles of its people. Canada regularly demonstrates a progressive approach to human rights and is a world leader in the rights of its people. Unfortunately, this sort of empathetic and compassionate attitude ends at its people and the country's animals are left in the dark to suffer unbearable fates with utterly no protection. 

Canada's animal cruelty laws have largely remained untouched since the 1950's despite a shift in the way we want to see animals treated. Despite overwhelming support for better animal welfare standards, Canada participates in some pretty awful and widely condemned activities including fur farming, the annual seal hunt, and a lack of real protections for farm animals. 

• FUR FARMING - Despite several countries around the world putting an end to fur farming, Canada continues to support this cruel, gruesome, and unnecessary industry. Animals are often kept in overpopulated crates covered in disease, feces, and other dead animals. They suffer immense emotional and mental trauma leading up to the very moment they are slaughtered. What's even worse is that the entire animal is not used. Animals like Minks, Coyotes, and Foxes, are not considered edible in the eyes of fur farmers. The industry literally breeds animals to skin them, there really isn't anything more grotesque and abhorrent then this.
• SEAL HUNT - Despite overwhelming support of an end to the seal hunt, Canada continues to participate in this tradition of slaughtering seals. These animals are chased, bludgeoned, stunned, shot, or all of the above. Countries around the world are banning imports of seal products and although demand for these products have diminished, Canada continues to spill the blood of innocent seals for profit. Images of blood stained snow and ice are synonymous with the annual seal hunt and Canada has absolutely no intention of ceasing the hunt. 

• BESTIALITY - This is the one that really shocks me more than any of the others. In Canada, the act of bestiality is only considered to be penetration. This means, oral sex and genital touching with an animal are considered legal and acceptable. Obviously, this is repulsive and clearly shows Canada's lack of attention to animal welfare. 

• IMPORT OF CAT AND DOG PRODUCTS - Canada has yet to ban the import of recognized cat and dog products including fur and meat. Despite outcry from activists and bills repeatedly being presented to ban these products, Canada continues to turn a blind eye when it comes to these products. Beware, anything labelled "fake fur" could potentially contain the fur of cats or dogs!

CANADA GETS AN F IN MY OPINION WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMAL WELFARE!

Countries around the world continue to improve their animal welfare standards while Canada completely ignores the plight of animals. Despite being a western country with its citizens wanting better protections for animals, Canada continues to show a complete disregard for animals and their struggles. It's a shame to call myself a Canadian when I know that our country could do so much more for animals.
