Colorado Officially Bans Wildlife Killing Contests

While Colorado already had a ban on killing larger wildlife in place, they have now moved forward with a ban on the the killing of smaller and fur bearing wildlife contests. Aside from animals like coyotes, fox, and bobcats being spared needless death, animals like prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and racoons will also be spared terrifying deaths at the hand of these contests.

These contests are gruesome, unnecessary, and frankly, a complete disregard for life. People gather in designated areas with the intention of hunting and killing as many target animals as possible within the allotted time frame. Animals like foxes or racoons net you minimal points while animals like bobcats and coyotes offer up significantly more points. Essentially,  it's a sport that supports slaughtering as many living creatures as humanly possible all in the name of fun. Pretty sick huh?

Images from past contests are easy to find online and what you see is death, everywhere. Piles of animal corpses stacked on one another, blood everywhere, happy humans holding guns or corpses that they then drag to the backs of their trucks, etc., it's a horrific sight to say the least. What is especially sickening is the presence of children. They are learning from a young age that animals are nothing more than toys for us to do with as we please. It's wholly irresponsible of any parent to promote these ideologies when animals across the globe are rapidly going extinct.

Colorado is not the only state to enact some kind of ban regarding these contests. New Mexico and Vermont have enacted bans on coyote killing contests while Massachusetts, California, and Arizona have banned predator / furbearer killing contests. Partial bans exist in Idaho, North Carolina, Utah, Washington, and Montana. These bans are an indication to me that the general populous is against these violent contests and that we need to move forward with bans on these contests entirely.

Contests designed to eliminate sentient beings are despicable and shameful. The human race has decided that we are allowed to take from this planet in any way we desire. Whether it's the destruction of habitats, drilling for oil in areas where animals are facing extinction, slaughtering contests such as these etc., we should be ashamed of what he have done to this planet and the animals that inhabit it with us.
