Estonia & Poland Both One Step Closer to Ending Fur Farming

Both Estonia and Poland have both  in recent weeks taken steps to officially end their participation in fur farming, an industry that is dying and outdated. Both countries are in the process of working on laws that would ban fur farming within their respective countries sparing hundreds of thousands of minks and foxes very year.

ESTONIA

A phase out program was introduced to Estonian parliament and has already survived its first reading which means it is one step closer to becoming a reality. According to a recent study, a whopping 75% of people surveyed in Estonia did not support the raising of minks and foxes for their fur. This number barely changed when surveying rural areas or nearby towns / villages indicating that the general populous supported a ban on fur farming. 

If all goes well and the ban is supported and put into law, fur farming will be phased out by 2023.

POLAND

Animal welfare group Anima International also shared on its Facebook page that the Polish Senate also approved a bill that supported a ban on fur farming with amendments. The bill will now move to lower parliaments for amendments and if approved, move to the President's desk for final approval. If Poland moves ahead with a ban on fur farming, it will be monumental as Poland is the third largest producer of fur in the world. Ending their participation in fur farming would be a direct hit on the industry sending out the message that fur is one the way out. If one of the largest producers of fur in the world is ending their fur-farming industry, what's stopping the rest of us from making the same commitment? 

Fur farming is currently banned in several European countries. However, many of them still allow the import of furs which is both hypocritical and counter-productive. We cannot make the claim that we care about animal welfare but simply turn a blind eye to the import of the same furs that we banned the production of due to cruelty. 

The fur industry is dying, that is evident. We musn't relent in our advocacy because it's working. We're talking about one of the biggest producers of fur in the world moving forward with a ban on fur farming, we cannot deny the importance of such a bold step. Here's to the end of one of the most exploitative and abhorrently cruel industries on our planet!
