I thoroughly enjoyed this article written for The Guardian by Patrick Holden. It is an article detailing the conditions of chickens raised in mass quantities and the effects of these industrial organizations on the environment.
One thing I learned quickly after becoming a Vegetarian was the destructive effect of Factory Farming. It is one of the leading producers of environmentally UNfriendly greenhouse gases. Not to mention the horrid conditions the chickens are left to live in, the emotional and mental stress on the birds, and the amount of natural resources consumed to produce meat products. It's a horrid industry all around. I can't imagine anyone being able to become learned on the subject and still consume chicken. It also details how this mass production has led to smaller, environmentally friendly farms with products that are deemed too expensive. Let's be frank, I don't eat chicken and I would never eat them, but if people are GOING to eat chicken I'd much prefer to see a family run, environmentally friendly farm producing the chicken rather than a destructive, factory farm. There are so many downfalls to eating factory farmed meat. Cheaper chicken aside, it's a deplorable industry that allows for animals to be treated like objects with no needs and a destructive force against our environment. Thoughts? HAPPY VEG
