Surprise surprise, President Trump panders to the wealthy at the expense of animals that are fucking endangered. IN extremely unsurprising news, the Trump administration has granted one Michigan man the right to import a black rhino trophy he paid $400, 000 to slaughter in Namibia Africa last year. This allowance would be the sixth black rhino trophy permitted into the US since 2013 and the third since Trump took office. Before I dive into how disgusting his administration's stance on the value of animals is, I'd like to discuss the current state of black rhinos in Namibia. There are only approximately 2000 black rhinos left in Namibia which if we compare that to the population of Namibia at just over 2 and a half million people, there are 1.2% black rhino population versus human population. Shockingly, despite the alarmingly low number of black rhinos left in the wild, 27 were poached in 2017 and 57 in 2018 which is double the amount in only one year. This demonstrates a frightening trend in growth in the amount of rhinos slaughtered every year and if that continues to increase, black rhinos will join the northern white rhinos in extinction.
What is the least surprising part of this story you ask? How about the Trump administration allowing this trophy into the US despite publicly calling trophy hunting a "horror show". Once again, he says one thing to appease an audience but it ends up being just another one of his lies because at the core, he cares more about wealthy human scumbags than he does endangered animals. In fact, his administration has repeatedly tried to chip away at the protections animals in danger have in place in favour of corporations.
Look, black rhinos are in serious danger of extinction here. It's time to actually do something about this as opposed to letting someone spill blood for the right price. Enough is enough, trophy hunting needs to be banned when we are talking about endangered animals. There is simply no time to waste and if we continue to turn our backs on endangered animals in favour of the highest bidder, we can say goodbye to some of the most recognized and celebrated animals in the world. California has become the very first U.S. State to ban fur trapping after signing the Wildlife Protection Act of 2019. The act puts an end to the centuries old practice of trapping and cruelly killing native animals like gray foxes, coyotes, badgers, otters, and mink, all of which are typically skinned and sent to foreign markets. This act will prevent future trapping and killing contributing to a healthy ecosystem.
By enacting this ban, fur trapping will lose all of its subsidies effectively putting an end to an industry that was already generating very little income. This on top of the fact that it had lead to the extinction of wolves and wolverines in the area and the decline of otters, badgers, and other native animals, it is evident that there is simply no place for it any longer. Animals killed for their fur are often killed in an extremely cruel manner that involves ensuring their pelts are kept in tact and in good form for the products they are intended for. This includes gassing, strangling, or shooting animals, all of which causes them immeasurable stress and anguish leading up to their deaths.
California recognizes that animals are already under siege by the White House which has repeatedly demonstrated a total lack of empathy for the plight animals currently face in the wild. Habitat loss, climate change, human encroachment, livestock protection, and illegal poaching are already putting animals at risk without including unnecessary fur trapping as well, As I've reported before, the US has repeatedly worked against what's best for animals by rolling back endangered species act protections, failing to properly protect animals facing immediate danger of extinction, and allowing trophies into the country from animals that are currently endangered. This Wildlife Protection Act is a step in the right direction inn protecting animals and also sending out the message that animal conservation is important to the population despite what the government may think. I hope this leads to more states adopting this policy. Fur has no place in our society and it's time for a global ban on something so unnecessary. HAPPY VEG It honestly seems like every third story is about the Trump administration being sued for their failure to protect critically endangered animals. On today's edition of Trump admin sued, they are facing lawsuits from the Center for Biological Diversity & Orca Relief Cititzens' Alliance (ORCA) for failing to act appropriately to protect West Coast Orcas after receiving nearly 36 protective measures necessary to protect Orcas. West Coast Orcas face a number of perils that have driven their numbers to only 73 after 3 of the tagged orcas were presumed dead. The three orcas had previously shown signs of malnutrition which motivated the conservation groups to put further pressure on the administration to act quickly before it was too late for orcas in this region. However, only a handful of the recommended measures were adopted to protect these orcas leading their numbers to continue to decline.
Canada took a few additional precautions when it came to protecting these orcas by issuing a no traffic zone through their habitat between June and October, labeling them sanctuary zones. Even with this, their entire habitat must be labelled a protected area which would divert traffic entirely allowing the salmon to return and the orcas to once again feed and communicate without human interruption.
Time is of the essence here and there's no time for his useless administration to wait. We're talking less than 100 of these orcas remaining, this lawsuit needs to wake them up to take immediate action before the orcas in this habitat go extinct forever. HAPPY VEG A group of 133 scientists have spoken out against a full on global ban of trophy hunting stating that they believe it will actually do more harm to the animals than good. Their study suggests that an immediate global ban would lead to mass illegal snaring, poisoning, and slaughtering and increase the black market activity for wild animal trophies. Among this, they also say that these places that rely on this income will have no other reason to conserve land for these animals and the land will go to other things leaving the animals in danger anyways. Where do I start with this and why I think this is complete and utter nonsense? I'm going to start with the trophy hunting industry as a whole here before I go further into this. Trophy Hunting is a sport solely for rich people who pay exponential amounts of money to travel to these locations and shoot an animal for fun, usually keeping some kind of trophy from their bodies as a "reward" for their efforts. This money supposedly ends up being funneled into conservation efforts and communities where it is a necessary source of additional income. There are SO many things wrong with trophy hunting it's astounding anyone continues to see anything positive in it, but here's my outlook on the problems.
Secondly, the animals they are paying to shoot are fucking endangered, like, facing extinction. Doesn't that just make it even more cringy, despicable, and exploitative? These communities need this money, these animals NEED to be protected, and these perverse rich people see an opportunity to slither in and take advantage of a bad situation in every way. The animals being killed are in serious need of additional protection, not in need of being hunted and shot dead for sport. It's wrong. The animals being hunted for sport are all facing their own dangers in the wild as it is. Habitat loss, illegal poaching, climate change, human conflict due to population growth and habitat loss etc., these animals have millions of other things working against their survival without the addition of a bunch of pompous rich folk who claim to have such a deep connection and respect for the animals they are putting bullets in to. It's complete hogwash, simple as that.
We must tackle trophy hunting with a plan in mind to compensate these people for what their communities will lose from the hunting. It's called planning ahead right? One cannot just ban something like this without expecting the outcome and already having several plans in mind. Consult these nations, find out how we can all work together to generate more income for them without the slaughter of endangered animals. If we come up with some concrete ideas, we can immediately put these plans in motion to help these nations generate income in other ways prior to the ban to ease the financial burden but c'mon, time is of the essence when it comes to extinction.
I couldn't be any more distressed about this report. As the report suggests, these animals are already facing several perils, all of which in my opinion are entirely human driven so it's important to start somewhere. Trophy hunting is a fucking novelty that we need to be done with, period. What are your thoughts? HAPPY VEG |
