United States Bill Aimed at Banning Wild Animals in Circus'

10/10/2020

worldanimalnews.com/today-is-an-important-day-of-action-to-raise-awareness-for-american-circus-animals-urge-your-senators-to-support-the-traveling-exotic-animal-public-safety-protection-act/
A bill aimed at protecting wild animals forced to perform in circus' was reintroduced to the House of Representatives in 2019 and is currently being mulled over to be signed into law. Unfortunately, it needs the support of the public through emails, phoning in, and contacting your local representatives to voice your support.
Wild animals in circus' suffer tremendously throughout their lives, being denied every thing that comes naturally to them. They are often plucked from a young age and forced into submission through aggressive and cruel methods. They are prodded, poked, and demeaned in order to break their wild instincts making them easier to train. Wild animals like tigers, bears, and elephants are forced to learn tricks that are wholly unnatural to them and put them in compromising positions. Tigers for example, naturally fear fire and yet they are forced to jump through hoops set ablaze all for the entertainment of humans who exploit them.
Picture
These poor animals are then forced to cram into tiny cages where they are transported to the next city to endure this entire grueling process over and over again. There are also incidents of wild animals turning on their handlers and attacking or turning on other animals which results in unnecessary injuries to innocent animals. From start to finish, animals in the circus' suffer needlessly for entertainment while many other entertainment options exist that don't exploit wild animals. All of this on top of the fact that these animals also face endangerment in the wild and yet we are plucking them out as babies and forcing them in to a life of servitude.

Countries across the globe have committed to ending wild animals in circus' and the United States needs to get on board. There is simply no excuse for employing animals in this manner any longer especially knowing what we know about how these animals are obtained and the cruelty they endure throughout their lives. The general public supports a ban on wild animals in entertainment and yet we are still struggling to get the government on board. That's why it is crucial that if you live in the United States that you contact your local representatives and let them know you support a ban on wild animals in circus'.

Follow the link at the top of the post from World Animal News for more information on how you can help move this bill into law!

Israel On Track to Be 1st Country To End the Fur Trade

10/9/2020

worldanimalnews.com/breaking-israel-is-on-its-way-to-becoming-the-1st-country-in-the-world-to-ban-the-immoral-fur-trade/
Israel is on its way to be the first country in the world to end the fur trade altogether. A bill to ban the fur trade is on its way to being implemented which would end the senseless slaughter of innocent foxes, sables, and other fur-bearing animals for clothing and garments. One traditional garment on the chopping block is the Shtreimel, a fur hat worn by married Jewish men on religious holidays. The shtreimel is particularly abhorrent as it takes approximately 30 fur-bearing animals to make one hat.
Where do I start on the many reasons the fur industry is rooted in cruelty? For starters, these animals are bred in captivity solely for their fur. Unlike animals like cows for example, fur-bearing animals are not utilized in their entirety. After their fur is stripped from their bodies, their carcasses are discarded like trash. Leading up to their deaths, fur-bearing animals are kept in filthy cages living among their feces and urine, stepping all over one another as they await their turn to be skinned. These poor animals are bludgeoned or electrocuted to preserve their pelts and in some instances, they are not even unconscious before their skins are being torn from their bodies. These animals suffer from the minute they are born until their lives are cut short for fashion.

While many countries across the globe have banned certain aspects of the fur industry, Israel would be the first country to ban the fur industry in its entirety. This would ban the import, export, and production of furs throughout the country. As I previously mentioned, many countries across the globe have tackled one aspect of fur farming while hypocritically allowing others. Banning the production of fur but still allowing fur to be imported and sold is hypocrisy at its finest. Unless you commit to a full ban on the industry altogether, you are continuing to be complicit in the horrendous murder of thousands of fur-bearing animals every year.

There is no necessity in fur and the general populous on our planet is opening their eyes to the horrors of the fur industry. Several surveys across the globe indicate that people are ready for fur to be banned altogether so it's up to our government's to address these concerns and move forward with full fur bans. As I said, banning only certain aspects of the industry is not enough, we need full bans on the fur industry once and for all. We're moving closer and closer towards this goal everyday and news like this is incredibly positive!

I will keep y'all posted as information becomes available. Congratulations to Israel and here's to a future that is free from the cruelty of the fur industry!

Only 9 Red Wolves Remain in The Wild

worldanimalnews.com/new-recovery-plan-is-ordered-for-critically-endangered-red-wolves-in-the-united-states-where-only-9-remain-in-the-wild/
As a result of a lawsuit filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, the United States Fish and Wildlife Services must update its plan for saving critically endangered red wolves. Sadly, there are only 9 documented red wolves remaining in the wild, relegated to a small area in the eastern part of North Carolina. The US Fish & Wildlife Services has been given until February 2023 to come up with a new, appropriate recovery plan for red wolves.
Last year, the Center for Biological Diversity identified five potential reintroduction sites that could support approximately 500 breeding pairs of red wolves. To date, nothing has been done to reintroduce wolves with the government dragging its heels in the dirt. There have been several recommendations to help preserve red wolves including coyote sterilization to deter cross-breeding but the government has been incredibly neglectful of the situation allowing the red wolves to dwindle down to only 9 individuals in the wild.

What I find to be both interesting and disturbing is the timeline given to the USFWS to address the repopulation of red wolves. They were given a deadline of February 2023, over 2 and a half years from now to address red wolf repopulation. There are 9 known red wolves in the wild. Does it not seem much more urgent than 2 and a half years from now? Do we honestly think that the 9 remaining red wolves will survive nearly three years of inaction to address their conservation? It seems to me a more immediate course of action would be required when the situation is as dire as this one is.
Picture
All too often are these ambitious plans given years upon years to come to fruition while the animals they are tasked to protect plunge further and further towards extinction. When you consider the severity of this situation in particular, how can it be a victory that the USFWS has until 2023 to come up with a realistic plan to repopulate red wolves? There are 9 of these red wolves remaining in the wild, can we honestly expect that they're going to hang around for 3 more years until the government can figure out how to protect them? It's ridiculous, negligent, and completely unfathomable that the USFWS needs 3 years to address the situation. They've already wasted enough time which allowed these beautiful wolves to dwindle down to single digits.

Animal conservation needs to be taken as seriously as it should be and worked upon as diligently and quickly as imaginable. Our continued lack of effort and lackluster approach to conservation is the exact reason red wolves, elephants, lions, cheetahs etc, are all headed towards extinction in the wild. Conservation is incredibly vital to a healthy ecosystem. All species' contribute to a healthy and balanced habitat and if we start allowing them to go extinct due to inaction, the trickle down effect will undoubtedly disrupt the balance further.

Look, we've already given ourselves the "right" to manipulate animals and their numbers which we happily do on a regular basis. Why is it when the situation calls for us to take immediate action, we in turn take years to figure out what to do? If it were about the human race, we'd be doing everything we could to address the issues (hello coronavirus anyone?) but because it's animals, there's such a lax approach to everything. Time is of the essence and my only hope is that red wolves survive long enough for the USFWS to do their damned job.

California Votes to Put Greater Restrictions on Rodenticides

10/1/2020

worldanimalnews.com/breaking-california-governor-gavin-newsom-signs-critical-bill-protecting-mountain-lions-other-species-from-toxic-rat-poisons/
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed bill AB 1788, The California Ecosystems Protection Act into law which will put more restrictions on the use of rodenticides and protect the state's wildlife. This news comes off the heels of a story I reported last week about a bobcat that inadvertently came into contact with rodenticides ultimately leading to its death.
Picture
Rodenticides are an outdated and cruel approach to managing the rodent population. Rodents who consume these poisons can take two to three days to perish from the poisons. During the dying process, they become disoriented and unable to escape predators making them an easy target. Animals like foxes, coyotes, and bobcats will consume these rodents ultimately ending up poisoned themselves. This leads to three days of slow, agonizing torture until they too will perish from consuming these poisons.

Rodenticides are indiscriminate and kill non target animals which makes it clear that these poisons are ineffective in managing rodent populations. California's wildlife are suffering at the hands of these poisons which has sparked activists to speak out against rodenticides generating necessary attention to the perils wild animals face at the hands of rodenticides.
The bill will heavily restrict the use of rodenticides essentially protecting innocent animals from days of agonizing torture. This is proof that activism works! So much attention was brought to this issue and California's Governor took appropriate action. If we continue to fight, we will see results! This is exceptional news for California's wildlife!
