Battle of the Meatiest Veggie Burgers

3/27/2020

The plant based meat market is growing rapidly. Every single day it seems there's a new burger, sausage, or plant based delight that resembles the texture, flavour, and look of meat. These products are taking the market by storm with meat eaters and veggies alike flocking to the market to snatch up their favourite plant based meats.

In my opinion, it all started with the burger. Three companies in particular have released their version of the meatiest, "beefiest", plant based burgers and have received acclaim in their own right. Now, it's time to find out which of these three burgers gives you the most nutritious bang for your buck. Let's meet the competitors for this battle of the meatiest plant based patty on the market!

ROUND 1
CALORIES
LIGHTLIFE - 270
IMPOSSIBLE - 240
BEYOND - 260

WINNER - IMPOSSIBLE

The Impossible burger takes the victory this round with 240 calories per patty. Keep in mind however that this number is for the patty only, when you pile on the toppings and include a bun, you can expect that to be closer to 6 or 7 hundred calories. Regardless, Impossible is the winner this round!
ROUND 2
FAT
LIGHTLIFE - 17g / 21% DV
IMPOSSIBLE - 14g / 18% DV
BEYOND - 18g / 23% DV

WINNER - IMPOSSIBLE

The numbers don't lie folks, the Impossible burger has the least amount of fat per serving coming in 4g less per patty than the last place finisher, the Beyond burger. Let's take a look at Saturated Fat to see if that changes the tides here!
ROUND 3
SATURATED FAT
LIGHTLIFE - 2.5g / 13% DV
IMPOSSIBLE - 8g / 40% DV
BEYOND - 5g / 25% DV

WINNER - LIGHTLIFE

Well, this changes things a little doesn't it? Despite having the least amount of fat per serving, the Impossible burger packs a whopping 40% of your daily allowance of saturated fat per serving which doesn't leave you a lot of wiggle room for the rest of your day. Lightlife takes the win this round with only 2.5 grams per serving!

ROUND 4
SODIUM
LIGHTLIFE - 540mg / 23% DV
IMPOSSIBLE - 370mg / 16% DV
BEYOND - 350mg / 15% DV

WINNER - BEYOND

Beyond takes their very first victory of the competition providing the least amount of sodium per serving out of all 3 patties. In this case however, you'd be safe to go with either the Impossible or the Beyond burger if you're watching your sodium intake as they were both very close. Unfortunately, the Lightlife patty fails tremendously in this department offering up almost a quarter of your daily allowance for sodium in one patty. When you start piling on toppings and include the bun, the Lightlife burger would likely creep up into very dangerous territory.
ROUND 5
DIETARY FIBER
LIGHTLIFE - 2g / 8% DV
IMPOSSIBLE - 3g / 11% DV
BEYOND -  2g / 7% DV

WINNER - IMPOSSIBLE

All 3 options are very close this round but the Impossible patty offers up an additional gram of fiber per serving.
FINAL ROUND
PROTEIN
LIGHTLIFE - 20g
IMPOSSIBLE - 19g
BEYOND - 20g

WINNER - TIE!

All 3 options offer up a hefty serving of protein but the Beyond and Lightlife patties come in at 20g of protein per patty meaning they tie for the win!

IMPOSSIBLE BURGER
Although the Lightlife & Beyond patties were strong competitors, the Impossible Burger takes the victory for the most nutritious meaty burger. Coming in with less calories, less fat, and more fiber per serving, it's clear the Impossible Burger is the smartest choice when it comes to indulging in a big, juicy burger.

BOCA - Chik'n Nuggets

Y'all know me by now, nugs are my obsession. There will never be a nug in my life that doesn't excite me and that's why I was so excited to try the BOCA brand of nugs. They've only recently started popping up in grocery stores here in Canada with a line of products that features nugs, burger patties, vegan ground, and falafels / bowls.

As I said, I'm always down to try the latest nug so I snatched up a bag and waited for the right moment (late at night when I shouldn't be snaking) to pop them in the oven. Here's what I thought!
  • The cook time on the bag was incorrect. After cooking them for the recommended time on the bag, (I believe it was 12 - 15 minutes) the nugs then needed to be flipped and cooked for another 10 or so minutes until they were thoroughly cooked and lightly browned on the outside.
  • They looked like nugs, that's for sure. Nothing out of the ordinary with their appearance.
  • They were tasty, but not special. Could I pick them out of a lineup of vegan nugs? Probably not, but I'd eat them regardless.
  • They hit the spot and gave me nug vibes. Usually, I test vegan nuggets on my dad because he's pretty open to trying them and he found these enjoyable so that means they pass the nug test.

BUY!
I say give them a buy! Is there anything that makes them special or unique to other nugs on the market? Not really, but they're tasty, satisfyingly crispy from the oven, and comparably priced to other leading nugs. If you're craving a nug experience, you'll enjoy these 100%.

Have you tried these or other products from the BOCA line? Let me know!
