gardein Crabless Cakes

I am a big fan of gardein products. They're so innovative, creative, and generally quite delicious. I was quite excited to try these crabless cakes when I first spotted them at the grocery store.

This is a unique situation because I had never tasted a crab cake before going vegetarian so I knew I would not be able to compare. With that being said, I know good flavour so I was excited nonetheless.

They can be pan fried or broiled and I chose to broil them because I had the oven running already. I loved how quickly they were cooked and nice and crispy on the outside. They had a beautiful, flaky center that was quite lovely and unlike other veggie meat foods I had tried.
The only thing I can say I wasn't entirely keen on was the smell. I really was not a big seafood person in my MED (Meat Eating Days) so the smell was a turn off for me but for someone who loved seafood, they would appreciate the smell and similarity. Not so much a con, more of a personal preference.

Overall, I definitely suggest picking them up if you were a seafood lover. They were so simple to prepare, nice and crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside, packed with protein, and just plain tasty!

What are Piquillo Peppers? They are a pepper typically grown in Northern Spain with a sweet flavour and virtually no heat.

I am so glad to have found this product. It was such a gorgeous, vibrant colour and was so sweet and delicious. I  simply halved a large, circular bun and brushed both sides with an olive oil mixture broiling them until nice and crispy. I finished them by smearing the bruschetta topping on after. So delicious!

Trust me, it's a delicious variation and a great option if you want bruschetta quick without having to prepare it.

Straying off the Beaten Path

Convenience plays a big factor in where we shop. It's so much easier to visit the "One Stop Shop" type of superstores where it's easy to grab everything we need and then some!

If there's any kind of tip I can give you this would be it. Take the time to visit specialty shops, local fruit markets, and international food stores. It's in these places where some of the very best products are available! For example, fruit markets usually carry local produce which is considerably fresher and by purchasing local, money is pumped back in to the local community.

Today I had the pleasure of visiting a Mediterranean market and I was astounded at the products I had access to. Fresh cheeses, imported foods and desserts, and a variety of dried pastas I had never seen. I picked up a new pasta called Radiatori which looks so dense and hearty with all of those ridges to store a gorgeous sauce! I found some delicious Spanakopita roll ups and a fabulous Piquillo pepper Bruschetta that I will be diving in to right away!

Take the time to visit these places and I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed!

Jarred Pesto

Pesto is generally comprised of basil, garlic, parmesan, and pine nuts all blended together with oil to make a fragrant, green sauce. It's a delicious addition to pastas, sauces, soups, and so many other dishes.

Pine nuts are expensive and relatively hard to find depending on where you live. A small bag of less than 100g can run you almost ten dollars and when you factor in the other ingredients you need for the pesto you can spend in upwards of 15$.

Jarred Pesto is one product I absolutely love. It's so inexpensive compared to home preparation and it delivers on flavour! I regularly use pesto and found that buying it prepared saved me time and money!
The only difference will be vibrancy in colour. Fresh herbs obviously will make for a greener pesto but basil goes dark quickly when handled which is why the jarred pesto won't look as vibrant. This is in no way an indicator of the freshness of the product.

When shopping for Pesto it's best to look in the international section of your grocer to get the best, authentic tasting pesto straight from Italy.

Fresh is always best but this jarred, ready made go to is great to have on hand!
