First off, I'd like to say how wonderful it is to feature a Canadian born product line on my blog. Although I may not always practice what I preach, supporting local is so important to me and this product line starts at home!

Olivieri has a large selection of fresh pastas and sauces that are quality products to use at home. There has yet to be a pasta I've tried that I did not like. I've recently used some of their pasta in my recipes so I wanted to make sure to let you know about the product and their company!

They offer a pretty large selection of Vegetarian products along with their meat selection as well. Some of my favourite pastas from Olivieri are. . . .

  • Their BASIL FETTUCCINE is to die for! Fresh, flavourful, and ready in under 5 minutes! Does it get any better than that?

  • I love their Tortellini! Their RAINBOW 3 CHEESE TORTELLINI is my favourite fresh pasta product ever. It's dense yet light and fluffy, texturally pleasing, and so flavourful!

  • Their SPINACH AND RICOTTA RAVIOLI is also a favourite of mine. They are so delicious and ready in a flash.

They offer a vast selection of pasta varieties along with a line of fabulous and flavourful sauces! Next time you think pasta, head over to the fresh section and look for OLIVIERI products!

A few Veggie Shopping Tips!

2/18/2016

I was at the vegetable market with a set meal plan in mind and when I finally stumbled across the tomatoes, I was less than impressed. They were not firm whatsoever and actually looked to be overripe. I thought, should I compromise and use them anyways? Never. It was now time to search for inspiration.

I've compiled a few tips for produce shopping that you should always keep in mind.

Picture
  • Touch and feel everything. Most vegetables will begin to lose their firmness as their freshness disappears. Cucumbers, Roma Tomatoes, Broccoli, and Peppers all start to feel a bit weak in your hand. Look for firm vegetables for fresh vegetables.
  • Use your eyes! Most vegetables give tell tale signs that they are losing freshness. Discolouration is the best signal that things are not so fresh. Wrinkled and bruised skin is another thing to watch out for. In the case of prepackaged vegetables, the same rules apply. Look firstly to the BEST BEFORE DATE and secondly inside the package. You're looking for browning, heavy moisture, or discolouration, all signs that the produce isn't at its freshest.
  • When it comes to potatoes, onions, and garlic, you want a firm product. Avoid them if they are sprouting, they are still edible but usually when buying these products you buy in bulk and they would likely expire before you used them all.
  • Lastly, when shopping for herbs and lettuces you are looking for obvious wilting or browning. Herbs will lose colour and even turn black when they are going bad so they are easy to spot.

Basically, firm textures + bright, vibrant colours = FRESH

Shop smart and never compromise and you'll always have great food from great produce!

Pre-Made Tart Shells

In lieu of a recipe I'm going to be trying next week I wanted to share with you all something to keep in mind when shopping for tart shells!

I always tell you guys to read your labels and it is important if you want to avoid accidentally consuming meat products. In the case of frozen tarts, you want to check for the fat used in the dough.
You want to see Vegetable Shortening and want to avoid Suets or Lard as these are animal fats.

Secondly, be mindful of timing. Frozen tart shells must be thawed prior to using so set aside an extra 15 minutes for your recipe!
