SOL Black Bean Burgers

I consider myself a Veggie Burger Aficionado so that's why I was so excited to try Sol Cuisine's Spicy Black Bean Burgers. I have only attempted scratch made veggie burgers once and it was a DISASTER. It was about as enjoyable as eating sawdust if you can envision that.

Let's start off with what I loved about these burgers!
  • I loved the amount of Fibre! There was almost a quarter of your recommended daily intake of fibre per burger!
  • NON GMO! Need I say more?
  • Protein! 11g of Protein per burger.
  • When these burgers were sizzling away on the stove top they smelled so delicious. Such a unique aroma in comparison to other burger products I had tried.

With that being said, there were some not so great things as well.
  • They were tiny. I didn't enjoy how thin they were and found the buns I had purchased to be too big for the patty. They were almost half the size of other burger products I had purchased in the past.
  • Cumin. I love my spices but surprisingly, cumin is not one of them. When it's combined with other strong flavours it really enhances the dish but it is so overpowering to me when it's the dominant spice. If you love Cumin, this isn't so much of a con.
  • Price was high. I'm o.k with shelling out for a premium product but these burgers were $1.00 more per box of 4. That's considerably more and I didn't feel like they were worth the increased price.
  • There was no spice. I was looking for a kick of jalapeno or chili and all I got was cumin. That's not considered a "spicy" flavour as far as I'm concerned.

It all comes down to the flavour and the value. I didn't mind the burger but found the cumin was too overpowering and the price was not justified in comparison to other competing products.

Cucina Arancini

Anyone who has ever prepared Arancini knows it is an extremely labour intensive dish. It takes a long time to prepare them with many steps before you make it to the eating stage. I myself have prepared two varieties in my time cooking and I will tell you that the effort is worth it when you take that first bite.

Broccoli & White Cheddar Arancini - http://happyveggie.weebly.com/recipes/broccoli-white-cheddar-arancini

Traditional Arancini - http://happyveggie.weebly.com/recipes/arancini

This is why when I stumbled across these frozen Arancini from Cucina, I just had to try them. Could they possibly be as delicious as freshly prepared Arancini? They offer a variety of frozen Arancini products but be aware that they are not all vegetarian so you have to do a little reading.

They claim to be better than home made and they were certainly delicious! I enjoyed the Margherita variety which had tomato sauce and mozzarella in the center. They were so crispy on the outside and ooey gooey on the inside, they left me completely satisfied. I also loved the flavour of the rice on the inside. It still had texture to it despite being a frozen product and I really picked up the flavours of the saffron.

Long story short, they were phenomenal. They may or may not be better than home made but they are worth the money and the time you'll save preparing them yourself. Keep an eye out for this tasty product!

Battle of the Chicken Strips

3/15/2016

It's time for another nutritional battle and today's competitors are fighting for the title of Healthiest Crispy Chicken Strip! Strips are great for snacking and even great for meal time which makes them great to have on hand.

Let's meet the competitors!

In the first corner we have our Veggie contestant, GARDEIN CRISPY CHIK'N STRIPS.

Our competitor is TYSON Batter Dipped Crispy Chicken Strips.

Let's find out who is number 1!

 GARDEIN
                                     VS                                         TYSON

For this competition we will be dividing the serving in half to compare statistics based on 2 Strips each.

ROUND ONE - CALORIES

GARDEIN: 100 Cal
TYSON: 95 Cal

WINNER: TYSON CHICKEN STRIPS

** This is an extremely close match up as both options are fairly low in calories.

ROUND TWO - FAT

GARDEIN: 4.5g / 7% DV
TYSON: 6g / 9% DV

WINNER: GARDEIN CHIK'N

** Another tight match here but the Gardein strips inch ahead with fewer grams of fat per serving. It may seem small but should you decide to have more than 2 strips, the difference in fat between the two will become more apparent.

ROUND 3 - SATURATED FAT

GARDEIN; 0.4g / 2%
TYSON: 1.25g / 6.5%

WINNER: GARDEIN CHIK'N

** Too much saturated fat can get you in to trouble and it's obvious that the Tyson strips provide 3 times the saturated fat per serving.

ROUND 4 - CHOLESTEROL

GARDEIN: 0mg
TYSON: 10mg

WINNER: GARDEIN CHIK'N

** Too much cholesterol is a bad thing and despite low numbers on both sides there are many factors to consider. What are you pairing it with? Are you having only 1 serving? Those low numbers can add up so it's great to start from a lower amount!

ROUND 5 - PROTEIN

GARDEIN: 8g
TYSON: 4.5g

WINNER: GARDEIN CHIK'N

** There is a clear winner here and this once again proves that a vegetarian diet CAN provide as much if not more protein at the end of the day.

ROUND 5 - VITAMINS AND MINERALS

WINNER: GARDEIN CHIK'N

** Simply comparing the four available vitamin statistics provided on both products, the Gardein strips provide more iron and calcium per serving. Now, consider that only 2 strips of the GARDEIN provides you with 5 vitamins and minerals at over 10% of your daily requirement! Fix yourself a salad on the side and you've got a nutritionally dense meal!

And the winner is. . . . . . . .

GARDEIN CRISPY CHIK'N STRIPS

Both products put up a great fight folks but the Gardein Strips come out on top! Packed with vitamins and protein and low in calories, fat, and cholesterol, it's easy to see why Gardein Crispy Chik'n Strips are the winner of the title of HEALTHIEST CHICKEN STRIP.

Please come back again for our next MEAT vs NON-MEAT BATTLE.

Shopping for a Slow Cooker

3/1/2016

With new appliances hitting the market every day, it's important to understand which appliances are worth their space in the kitchen. Slow cookers are definitely one of those appliances that you want to have at home. They can cook nearly anything and meals in the slow cooker are some of the most hassle free, simple meals to prepare.

When shopping for a slow cooker, here are a couple things to keep in mind;

  • Slow Cookers come in a variety of sizes generally ranging from 3 to 7 or 8 quarts. Consider how often you use it, how many people you feed regularly, and how much kitchen space you have. Keep in mind, larger pots are rarely much more expensive and are a better value. Soups, stews, chili, these meals can all be frozen and enjoyed at a later date so they are good for larger batches!
  • Different brands and more expensive pots will have various controls and settings but if you're looking for basic, you want to see 4 minimal settings.
    1. OFF
    2. LOW
    3. HIGH
    4. WARM
These basic settings are all you truly need. Most recipes you follow will likely use the low or high setting so other temperatures and settings are fairly unnecessary. The WARM setting is great for dips that you want to keep warm
  • What's in a name? Crock Pot brand is what I grew up with so there is a familiarity there but there are so many varieties of slow cooker available. Use online reviews, compare information on the box at the store, and ask friends for the best choice. All slow cookers are basically doing the same thing no matter the brand, design, or settings so a lot of it will be to your own tastes and preferences in design and appearance.

As I said, one of the best kitchen appliances you can have is a slow cooker. Even your friend who can't toast bread can use a slow cooker and make a great meal! I hope these suggestions help you when shopping for a slow cooker!
