Bypass or Buy? Lightlife Bacon

I recently noticed Lightlife brand products on a trip to Metro (in Ontario, Canada) and I was super excited. It's always great to see a new brand of vegetarian / vegan products hit the market, especially because they had so many different products available.

After checking out their website, I was pleasantly surprised by how many products they had and their current longevity. Having been around since 1979, this is a group of people who are invested in the vegetarian / vegan movement. That's super commendable to me especially considering some other brands are owned by non-vegan corporations.

But about the bacon. I don't know if you guys have ever tried Yves brand of deli meat but if you have, you'd recognize the appearance of this bacon. It looked a lot like vegan lunch meat cut into strips versus bacon and I guessed how it would taste before I enjoyed it. I must admit, it didn't really taste like bacon or fry up like I remember bacon frying up like, so there was that.

With that being said however, it was tasty enough. It worked on my BELT sandwich adding the perfect amount of salty goodness to the sammie. It also added a meatiness that I was looking for and felt was much needed. You can almost trick yourself if you use it properly because it offers a lot fo what bacon offered without really nailing the flavour.

Ultimately, I enjoyed it although the flavour didn't remind me of bacon. I loved that they were a wholly plant based group and I loved that this line is not overly expensive. After checking out their website, I am definitely excited to try the rest of their products. I'm especially excited to try the bowls because there were some seriously good looking dishes.

Check out their website for their history, where to buy, and a complete list of the products they offer!

Hilary's - Hemp and Greens Burger

Hilary's offers a variety of burgers all with one common theme, good for you food with no additives. This is the second burger from Hilary's I've tried after trying the World's Best Veggie Burger which I previously reviewed.

First of all, I love the knowledge that I'm eating something free of gmo, allergens, and all kinds of preservatives. There's nothing worse than purchasing a product only to find out it is loaded with strange, sciencey sounding ingredients.

Now, it's important to note that these burgers are kind of expensive if you compare by value because most burgers in this price point come with 4 patties and Hilary's only comes with 2. That's certainly a downfall.

Flavour wise, I found the burgers to be missing salt / seasoning. They were tasty, don't get me wrong, but they lacked any kind of serious flavour which I was kind of searching for. They ate well however, cooked up well, and made for a great sandwich. I just found that they needed some more flavour because my toppings kind of drowned out any flavour from the burger itself.

BYPASS OR BUY? - Honestly, I don't want to say. I liked them enough to try the remainder of the line but found them to be lacking seasoning and kind of expensive. I say, give them a try and see for yourselves. You can at least be assured that you're eating a wholesome, quality product free of scummy additives.

MEATLESS BREADED CUTLETS

happyveggie.weebly.com/products--facts/zoglos-crispy-breaded-cutlets
This is the third product from Zoglo's that I've purchased and reviewed after discovering that they have quite an extensive line of meatless products.

What's not to love about falafels? In most cases anyhow, they're herbaceous, crispy on the outside, and full of flavour. These falafels however, kind of fell short in that department. Not that they weren't tasty or anything, just not quite what I was hoping for.

They were crispy on the outside for sure which is always something I look for in a product like this. My complaint would be that they were kind of lacking in that robust flavour I was hoping for. They had some of the smells and flavs I was searching for, but something just fell short. They also were quite dry unfortunately, and without a provided sauce to accompany them, they left my mouth in search of something liquidy to was them down.

BYPASS OR BUY?

Honestly, they're good in a pinch, but if you're truly looking for a falafel that provides you with everything you're hoping for, there's definitely better options on the market. It's a bypass from me!
