Nutritional Battle of "The Chicken Club Sandwich"

8/27/2015

I recently prepared myself a delicious Vegetarian spin on a traditional Chicken Bacon club sandwich and I got to wondering, what was the nutritional difference between my delicious sandwich and the real thing? I scoured the internet comparing nutritional information for everything involved in making a chicken club and came up with an average of what I was seeing.

My sandwich had GARDEIN Chik'n Scallopini and YVES Veggie Turk'y Slices, lettuce, tomato, red onion, 1 Tbsp. fresh parsley, 1 Tbsp. Mayo, and light marble cheese.

For the Chicken Club, I kept it simple, roasted, skinless chicken breast, bacon (same grams as the Turk'y) , mayo, lettuce, and tomato.

I think the main thing we need to note here is that this type of sandwich is not light by any means, whether you're a meat or veggie eater. It is high in sodium in both cases although, my version was 400 mg less.

I think the most notable difference between the two is the vitamin and nutrient portion. My Vegetarian club sandwich was packed with nutrients with over 9 Vitamins / Minerals at over a quarter of your recommended daily intake.

It's important also to note the difference in CHOLESTEROL. My sandwich is extremely low in cholesterol and has virtually no trans fat. The Meaty version has a large amount of cholesterol. You can thank the meat for that.

Everywhere else you look on the sandwiches, both are comparable. My version had less calories and saturated fat but a little more fat.

VEGGIE CHIK'N CLUB

2 Gardein Chik'n Scallopini                                2 Thick Slices Tomato
4 slices YVES Veggie Turk'y                              3 Slices Red Onion
3 slices Thick, White Bread                               1 Tbsp. EVOO Mayo
4 Slices Marble cheese                                      1 Tbsp. Fresh Parsley
1/4 C Baby Romaine
                                           Sea Salt / Black Pepper

  1. Cook the scallopini according to package directions. (I tend to fry mine a bit longer to achieve a nicer crisp on the outside. Sprinkle both sides with sea salt, black pepper, and dried parsley.
  2. Toast  the bread. Spoon half the mayo onto both the top and bottom pieces of the sandwich and season with black pepper.
  3. Starting with the bottom slice, sprinkle the parsley. Lay the chik'n scallopini's and follow with the cheese. Lay the middle slice of bread and continue layering with the lettuce, tomato, onion, and turk'y slices. Top with the final piece of bread.

YVES Veggie Nuggets

I've been going out of my way lately to try every meatless product available regardless of my inhibitions. Chicken Nuggets were not a favourite of mine back in my meat eating days so so I've had no interest until now.

First off I would like to say I was pleasantly surprised. They were nice and crispy on the outside and surprisingly moist on the inside. I had an initial feeling that they would be dry and I was definitely surprised.

I also think it is great that they paired nicely with everything that I dipped them in. I used traditional plum sauce and although it wasn`t my favourite pairing, it was tasty nonetheless. I dipped them in a hot sauce / mayo combination as I did when I ate meat and that was good as well.

My favourite pairing was gravy. Dipping them in a "chicken" flavoured gravy was almost eerily similar to what I remembered the real thing to be. Makes a good swap for meat any day!

Also, note the nutritional value, sodium is slightly high but pair your dish with a nice, light salad and look at those vitamins and minerals :)
